As is China’s leader in the EV segment, BYD is also one of the largest battery manufacturers
BYD (Build Your Dreams) is one of China’s leading EV automakers. Not only is it doing business activities locally, but they are also known to be dealing with cars and other businesses globally.
As a well-known automaker, they are known to manufacture their batteries. Research suggests that it could surpass CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited), which happens to be the global leader in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries.
In comparison, CATL has a vast lineup of battery tech. Apart from its current Lithium-ion cells, they have also come up with sodium-ion cells, which the company claims will offer a more incredible fast-charging performance. They also supply Tesla with batteries.
Meanwhile, BYD has a cell-to-pack (CTP) technology and Blade Battery, which, if equipped in BYD’s car, will have a range of more than 600 kilometers.
Since BYD is also a car manufacturer, all batteries will have a specific destination, unlike CATL.
In the long run, BYD has a better advantage than CATL. For instance, if Tesla can opt for another supplier, CATL may have to find another client.
The supplier will not be a problem in BYD’s case since they can use it in their vehicles.
Accordingly, BYD already managed to surpass CATL last April in China. According to Car News China, BYD managed to rank first in China with 4.19GWh of lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP) installed on electric vehicles. They account for 47.14% of the LFP market share. Meanwhile, CATL is second with a total of 3.05 GWh installed on EVs and 34.29% of the market share.
