Chinese electric automaker BYD has just introduced its 5th-gen DM hybrid powertrain that delivers over 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) between charges and refuels, Bloomberg reported.
The move can significantly aid BYD in its efforts to continuously overthrow established automakers like Toyota and Volkswagen in the electric vehicle market.
BYD’s 5th-gen DM hybrid powertrain
BYD officially launched its next-gen DM (Dual Mode) hybrid technology, or DM 5.0, at a live-stream event from China on Tuesday evening.
According to the report, the new powertrain enables lower fuel consumption compared to its predecessor. To be specific, it allows vehicles to have fuel consumption per 100 kilometers of only 2.9 liters at a low charge.
In addition, it boasts a combined driving range of up to 2,100 kilometers. It indicates a threefold increase compared to conventional fuel vehicles.
Qin L and Seal 06 sedans first to benefit from the new powertrain
Excitingly, BYD announced that the Qin L and Seal 06 sedans are the first models to ride on the new DM technology.
These two models will cost below 100,000 yuan ($13,800), potentially disrupting the electric vehicle market. Both debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2024.
In addition, they are part of the brand’s Dynasty and Ocean series, respectively.
“The longer range means some of BYD’s dual-mode plug-in electric hybrid cars can cover the equivalent of Singapore to Bangkok, New York to Miami or Munich to Madrid on a single charge and a full tank of gas.”

BYD continues to push boundaries in electric and hybrid vehicle development
BYD continues to make a name for itself by constantly improving its electric and hybrid car technology.
The company’s latest innovation, the 5th-generation Dual Mode (DM) hybrid powertrain, boasts an exceptional driving range to alleviate customers’ range anxiety.
With electric and gasoline power sources, the 5th-gen DM aims to provide drivers with the best of both technologies: a competitive electric range and an internal combustion engine for extended journeys.
