Green yacht builder Aquon successfully had its first-ever sale for the 64-foot eco-catamaran, per a report citing European yacht broker MYSEA.

Remarkably, the AQUON One uses solar and hydrogen fuel cells to operate. It is big enough to carry eight to ten passengers with 0% emissions.

Background

AQUON is a Zurich-based yacht maker with an emphasis on sustainability. Notably, it was established under Swiss Sustainable Yachts AG. According to the firm, it integrates Swiss engineering of the highest caliber with Spanish naval architecture knowledge and Italian design to produce an entirely novel type of connected, futuristic, and eco-friendly yacht.

The AQUON One, the company’s first emission-free boat, serves as the foundation of its stated goal.

“A smart designer catamaran that redefines premium yachting. It offers an independent lifestyle for sustainable luxury, powered by green hydrogen and solar energy. The name AQUON symbolizes this state-of-the-art technology and references this powerful clean water luxury.”

AQUON One – a truly fascinating project! The electric catamaran is self-sufficient energy-wise and the power form its 64m2 of solar panels either fuels the yacht’s propulsion system or powers its electrolyser which converts sea water to ‘green’ hydrogen. https://t.co/f5a7QqSpsG pic.twitter.com/ZJBrJ1SBXl

What’s the big deal?

AQUON’s team has created a special system for the yacht that can operate for days at sea without refueling. It may even be able to provide an indefinite range without the need for fuel.

The company aims to establish a new benchmark for sustainable luxury maritime boats with the first sale of the AQUON One.

AQUON has integrated hydrogen fuel cells to generate extra green power and enable long-term energy storage, unlike many solar boats.

AQUON One’s power generation concept

Photovoltaic solar panels covering 64 square meters are installed on the top of AQUON One.

With this technology, its li-ion batteries are efficiently charged. For information, its batteries provide onboard short-term electrical storage required for propulsion and onboard energy consumption,

Desalinated seawater is subsequently turned into hydrogen gas using extra solar energy.

After being compressed to 300 pressure, the gas is then kept aboard carbon tanks.

Every time energy is required to power two electric motors, fuel cells turns the hydrogen back to electricity.

Remarkably, the only emission produced by this vessel is the pure water and thermal heat utilized to produce hot water onboard and warm its cabins.

When traveling at 4-6 knots under enough sunlight, it can guarantee a limitless range.

Furthermore, it can travel at a top speed of 16 knots (18.4 mph) and a cruising speed of 8 knots (9.2 mph) when it is not trying to preserve energy at sea.

“AQUON One is made for living. It is a loft at sea without compromise. We have imagined a place to enjoy the moment, to spend quiet time away from the rush and with loved ones. The design itself was inspired by silence and the elegance of a manta ray, creating a feeling of harmony and ease…”
