An electric car from the prominent tech firm Apple has long been the subject of speculation in the technology industry. Despite the lack of official confirmation from the company, EV enthusiasts hope that the innovative Apple car model under the “Project Titan” will arrive.

Previous speculations

Initial reports shocked the electric vehicle industry with indications that Apple is developing a self-driving electric car at the same time as Tesla’s autonomous driving software advancements around 2015, Times of India reports.

In 2014, Apple was terrified.

Engineers were resigning en masse for Elon Musk's Tesla for a chance to work on the next big thing.

So Apple decided to do the same.

This is the story of Project Titan; Apple's greatest and most expensive failure.

Apart from that, Apple was also reported to have hired former Tesla employees for its Project Titan team. In early March 2022, it also employed ex-Ford executive Desi Ujkashevic to accelerate its autonomous driving car project.

TechRadar also reported Apple insiders’ 2021 claims that the company aims to release its first electric car in 2025. However, 2022 reports occurred indicating that the company delayed the initial target to 2026. It also suggested that Apple may not include self-driving technology in the plan.

Major hint so far

Considering the significant anticipation for the speculated Apple car, CEO Tim Cook had no choice but to break his silence in an exclusive interview with the New York Times in 2021.

“In terms of the work that we’re doing [in that field], obviously, I’m going to be a little coy on that. The autonomy itself is a core technology… If you step back, the car, in a lot of ways, is a robot. An autonomous car is a robot. And so there’s lots of things you can do with autonomy. And we’ll see what Apple does.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook

The news platform further dug into the details of Project Titan, especially if it would be an actual vehicle model or just an in-car operating system.

“We love to integrate hardware, software, and services, and find the intersection points of those because we think that’s where the magic occurs. And so that’s what we love to do. And we love to own the primary technology that’s around that.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook

Despite refusing to elaborate on the project, he hinted that Apple is developing something interesting for the EV industry.

“We investigate so many things internally. Many of them never see the light of day. I’m not saying that one will not.”

What’s currently known about the Project Titan?

The Project Titan is a codename for Apple’s speculated all-electric car development.

As mentioned, initial reports stated that the company aims to make the model fully autonomous. However, plans changed to include manual driving.

Under this project, Apple is exploring various technologies related to EV development, such as follows:

  • self-driving software
  • battery technology
  • in-car entertainment software

According to the latest reports, Apple may finally launch Project Titan’s developments by 2026.

Despite the interesting reports and speculations surrounding Project Titan, it must be noted that its arrival remains vague. Apple has yet to explicitly confirm its plans to penetrate the EV industry. That said, we can only wait and see if the Apple car will actually come to fruition in the future.
