Graphite maker Anovion announced plans on Monday to develop an $800 million factory in Southwest Georgia as it aims to be a significant supplier of graphite for electric vehicle batteries.

The Chicago-based advanced materials company aims to produce synthetic graphite anode in Bainbridge, with plans to start production in 2025.

.@GovKemp announced that Anovion Technologies, a premium synthetic graphite anode materials supplier, will establish a new manufacturing facility in Bainbridge. Over $800M investment & 400+ jobs boost Georgia's future as an e-mobility capital. Learn more: https://t.co/rohQ62Punv pic.twitter.com/fJFlaaDn02

About the investment

The planned 1.5-million-square-foot plant in Bainbridge will aid the company in producing premium synthetic graphite, the most-used material in EVs by mass. It surpasses copper, manganese, nickel, cobalt, and lithium.

Remarkably, it will be the first-ever facility of its scale and size in North America. According to the press release, the new plant will have an initial annual production capacity of 40,000 metric tonnes once fully operational.

Anovion CEO explained that the company selected Southwest Georgia due to its closeness to other battery and EV production plants on top of the state’s existing infrastructures.

“Anovion conducted a thorough search to identify a location that addressed our energy, transportation, logistics, and human capital needs that would ensure we have the ecosystem in place to produce the highest quality and sustainable synthetic graphite anode material on the market today.”

It is worth noting that the project is expected to generate 400 jobs in the state. Governor Brian Kemp expressed his enthusiasm for the investment.

“We’re proud to welcome Anovion to the No. 1 state for business that is fast becoming the e-mobility capital of the nation. Job creators like them are recognizing that every corner of our state has the resources and workforce needed for success. Having met their team personally, I look forward to celebrating their partnership with the hardworking Georgians of Decatur County.”

In retrospect, the US Department of Energy granted Anovion $117 million under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in October 2022. The fund is meant to aid the country’s battery production supply chain, boosting electric vehicle adoption.

The planned Bainbridge plant is expected to start production by late 2025.
