Battery breakthrough

Amprius employed its advanced material system technology to develop a battery cell with a remarkable 10C discharge capacity and a 400 Wh/kg energy density.

The new battery technology will undoubtedly aid the emerging electric aviation industry, particularly for crewed and uncrewed aerial systems. The company asserted that this market’s value is expected to hit more than $49 billion by 2025.

Amprius further noted that the battery cell’s unprecedented power capacity could potentially advance two segments in the electric aviation space, including the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and the electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL). It will apparently offer superior propulsion power and energy to efficiently support the aircraft’s takeoff, cruise, and landing activities.

Furthermore, the new battery technology is capable of boosting flight range by up to 50% and payload capacity. In addition, it can support an acceleration time of 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in just under 1.5 seconds. The company noted that this particular industry is predicted to hit $67B by 2025.

It also has a remarkable 3500 W/kg power density during standard discharge state and 4400+ W/kg max output at lower depths-of-discharge, extending the cell’s usable discharge capacity.

The company further claims it can effectively handle high current pulses of 3000 W/kg at 30% depths-of-discharge.

These factors enable the company to cut battery weight and volume. In effect, the battery has boosted range, less charging frequency, and lower operating cost.

Amprius also indicated that the new battery cell can support ultra-fast charging (UFC) technology. Therefore, it can hit 80% charge in just about six minutes.

“Commercial opportunities in electric mobility are profoundly impacted by their power and energy requirements. Our new cell delivers impressive specific power and energy density performance, approximately 200% higher than traditional graphite cells, while achieving a 10C discharge rate, significantly expanding application possibilities and driving cost-effectiveness.”
