German sports car maker Porsche has once again demonstrated the competence of its products, with the new 2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT setting a new lap record at Laguna Seca raceway in late February 2024.
According to the press release, the new Porsche Taycan variant is the “most powerful series-production” model of the brand of all time.
Product portfolio expansion
The Volkswagen-owned brand Porsche is expanding its product portfolio with two new track-focused variants of its flagship electric vehicle, including the Taycan Turbo GT and the Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package.
According to Porsche, both Taycan variants can yield more than 1,100 PS (1,084 horsepower) at peak power. The Taycan Turbo GT has a 21.6 – 20.7 kWh/100 km power consumption, while the Weissach variant is slightly more efficient at 21.3 – 20.6 kWh/100 km.
New lap record
Porsche brought the new Turbo GT and Turbo GT with Weissach package to the Weathertech Raceway in Laguna Seca as it seeks to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid’s record on February 23, 2024. Unsurprisingly, the German automaker succeeded.
Porsche development driver Lars Kern only took 1 minute and 27.87 seconds to overthrow the Tesla Model S Plaid’s record of 1 minute and 30.3 seconds set in 2020.
This significant milestone advanced the Weissach packaged-equipped variant’s position as the “fastest electric series-production car” at the Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca in California.
In hindsight, a pre-production version of the Turbo GT with Weissach package also set a new class record on the Nürburgring. Mr. Kern recorded a 7:07.55 minute lap time on the Nordschleife, beating the Track Package-equipped Tesla Model S Plaid by a notable 17.681 seconds.
“The two records in Laguna Seca and on the Nordschleife show what great track potential there is in the Taycan. To prove your mettle on the track, it’s not enough to simply have as much power as possible. The overall package of accelerating and braking, cornering grip, aerodynamics, stability and fine-tuning has to be right.
In the Taycan Turbo GT and the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package in particular, our engineers have achieved this in absolutely stunning fashion. They have already done a great job with the recently updated existing Taycan models. But our new GT cars yet again clearly raise the bar even higher in terms of driving dynamics.”

Winning attributes
Porsche highly believes that the new Turbo GT model’s competitive power and performance enabled it to secure the “fastest electric series-production car” title at Laguna Seca raceway. The brand outlined that it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.1 seconds.
It also has a top speed of 190 mph. In addition, the Weissach package that cuts 157 pounds of extra weight by removing the rear seats also contributed substantially to the achievement of the new lap record.
It is also worth noting that both Taycan Turbo GT variants can deliver a WLTP-estimated range of about 340 miles from a 96.0kWh battery pack. They can also yield a combined output of 777 horsepower. The launch control start can also enable a peak power output of 1,019 horsepower, or 1,092 hp, based on Porsche’s peak power measurement method.
Porsche is expected to start customer deliveries for the new Taycan Turbo GT models in spring 2024. The brand has also yet to announce the exact pricing, but we must expect that these high-performance EVs will certainly not be cheap.
