Highlights
  • Book Early: Demand for EV rentals spikes during holidays; secure your electric ride in advance to avoid last-minute hassles.
  • Incentives Matter: Take advantage of discounts and free charging offers from rental agencies and EV-friendly hotels.
  • Charge Smart: Familiarize yourself with the EV model's charging protocol and locate nearby charging stations to keep your journey smooth.
  • Weather Watch: Keep an eye on temperatures; extreme weather can impact your EV's battery life and travel range.

The widespread adoption of electric vehicles across the world has prompted the emergence of rental services like Hertz and Grab. However, EV driving and operating differs greatly from traditional internal combustion engine-powered cars.

That said, it is crucial for people to learn more about EVs and the renting process before deciding to rent one for the holidays, which may require long trips.

Without further ado, here are some of the most important things to note when renting an electric vehicle.

Tips

Advance planning

Interested renters must plan ahead because the growing popularity of electric vehicle rental services may make it challenging to book one. Many customers may also be planning to rent EVs as some companies offer popular models like Tesla and Polestar.

Considering that the holiday is a peak season for traveling, there may be high demand for EV rentals. That said, planning and booking in advance is crucial to secure a rental.

Check discounts/incentives

You can also check for incentives and discounts on various rental car providers and hotel brands. For instance, Hertz and Avis provide customer discounts on base rates.

On the other hand, Hilton, Marriott, Holiday Inn, and Best Western offer free charging for guests with EVs. Radison Hotels also offers guests driving Tesla EVs with free charging. In addition, the EV Hotels app can also aid you in navigating hotels with EV charging infrastructures.

Research available charging stations

You must also research the charging stations’ availability in and out of your destination before renting an electric car.

Most EVs today can offer between 200-300 miles between charges, but it will not be enough if you need to travel longer.

It is also worth noting that Tesla EVs have built-in charging station maps. You can also use other platforms like Google and ChargeHub. Electrify America is also a recommendable app that offers maps of EV charging locations and real-time charger availability.

If Budget would rent me a Tesla, i'd take it in a second. But the non-Tesla charging infrastructure is so hilariously unreliable that I would never consider one as a rental.

Check charging port and other features of the model

You must also check the EV charging port placement of the model you drive away. It is also important to learn the proper way of opening the charging port. You need to check the model’s charging plug type to see if it uses Level 1/2 chargers or DC fast chargers.

In addition, you must also learn more about the EVs’ features, like regenerative braking, one-pedal driving, etc. All these are important to avoid range anxiety and optimize efficiency.

Monitor weather conditions and cabin temperature

EV renters must also closely monitor weather conditions, as extreme temperatures can substantially reduce the battery’s driving range.

Therefore, it may be a hassle for you to frequently charge the car to go on your planned trips.

Leave time to charge

It is also important for you to ensure that you have enough time to charge the EV before driving back. A DC fast charger supports a faster charging session, but it may also take between 40 and 60 minutes. Ensure you have enough time to charge to avoid extra fees.

Conclusion

Familiarizing and learning about electric vehicles and charging is substantially important for those people interested in renting one. It will help them avoid potential problems and extra fees. Moreover, it can also ensure their safety while traveling.
