The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy has placed rules for charging stations for electric cars all over the emirate.
With the release of the regulatory policy for electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the emirate, Abu Dhabi has taken a big step toward meeting the country’s strategic goal of “Net Zero by 2050.”
Even though the use of electric vehicles in the emirate is still in its early stages, the Department of Energy said that changes in technology could soon increase customer demand for EVs, which it says will become common in the capital over the next few years.
The Department of Energy (DoE) policy supports Abu Dhabi’s Low Emission Vehicle Strategy, which aims to use a variety of energy sources as the world moves toward electric cars.
The policy includes the rules for ownership, installation, and management of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), the electricity supply to EVSE, and the way prices are set for end customers.
One issue that EV consumers face is range anxiety. The said policy will enable to make necessary investments into EV charging infrastructure and help tackle the issue. Additional charging infrastructure will also encourage more consumers to switch to EVs.
H.E. Eng. Ahmed Al-Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the DoE, said in a statement, “With the growing penetration of clean and renewable energy into our grid system, supported by Abu Dhabi’s major solar and nuclear projects, maximizing our EV charging infrastructure and developing policies to support integration of new and emerging EV technologies across the electric grid is very important and will provide a critical route to decarbonize the transportation sector,”
Al-Rumaithi also explained that the new policy sets the rules and guidelines for how the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles will be used, considering the benefits to customers, the economy, and the environment.
In 2016, the Abu Dhabi Executive Council passed the Low-Emission Vehicle Strategy. The Department of Municipalities and Transport came up with the strategy to help the Emirate of Abu Dhabi adopt low-emission vehicles as the world moves toward a new energy paradigm.
