Chinese startup XPeng has released its smart EV delivery results for January 2023, which significantly declined partly due to the seasonal slowdown during the Chinese New Year from mid-January.

Xpeng EV sales – January 2023

XPeng’s customer deliveries saw a year-on-year decline of 60% to 5,218 electric cars, marking the startup’s fifth month in a row of a YoY sales drop. It must be noted that XPeng’s offerings are primarily marketed in its homeland, China.

As for the sales breakdown, the new G9 flagship SUV accounted for 2,249 units of the company’s total sales. Meanwhile, the remaining 2,969 units were contributed by the G3/G3i, P5, and P7 models, representing a 77% YoY sales drop.

XPengの1月の納車数は5,218台、前年から60%減少、5ヶ月連続で前年割れ、1月の値下げの原因との指摘。

同社は本日2/3に欧州向けに2車種を発表予定で、輸出の増加が期待されています🧐

XPeng EV sales – FY 2022

For comparison, XPeng reported sales of more than 120,000 in the full year 2022. It is a remarkable sales growth from 2021’s record of 98,155 units.

The data shows that the all-new XPeng G9 accounted for 6,373 units of the company’s overall sales last year. As of the end of 2022, XPeng had delivered a total of 258,710 electric cars.

Is the sales decline really due to the seasonal slowdown?

XPeng explained in its recently published press release that the sales decline was affected by the Chinese New Year holiday.

“Vehicle deliveries for the month reflected seasonal slowdown during the Chinese New Year holiday period which began in mid-January.”

However, it seems that the automaker is currently struggling with issues other than the seasonal slowdown. For context, XPeng sold nearly 13,000 EVs in the same period last year, despite the holidays.

That said, recent reports’ indication that Tesla’s significant price cuts in the Chinese market have negatively affected XPeng’s sales and deliveries made sense.

Nonetheless, the automaker persists in rebounding in the coming months. XPeng announced plans to debut the P7’s new variant. It would undoubtedly change the company’s current performance, given that the electric sedan is the most popular model in XPeng’s portfolio.

Apart from that, the startup also plans to debut two new BEVs in Europe on February 3, as it aims to improve sales.
