Tesla has just witnessed a notable decrease in delivery times for its popular offerings, the Model 3 electric sedan and Model Y electric crossover, in the Chinese market.
Wait times now range from 1-6 weeks, down from previous estimates
Tesla’s official order page for the Model 3 and Y revealed that all their variants now have only 1 to 6 weeks delivery wait times.
For comparison, customers had to wait for 3 to 6 weeks to take delivery of their ordered Tesla Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive (RWD), Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive (AWD), and Performance variant variants from Giga Shanghai. Meanwhile, Tesla Model Y’s previous delivery time was around 2-6 weeks.
As you can see in the online configurator, the China-made Tesla Model 3 has the following prices depending on the trim:
- RWD – RMB 231,900 ($32,000)
- Long Range AWD – RMB 271,900 ($37,500)
- Performance – RMB 335,900 ($46,300)
On the other hand, here are the pricing of the Tesla Model Y variants:
- RWD – RMB 249,900 ($34,500)
- Long Range AWD – RMB 290,900 ($40,100)
- Performance – RMB 354,900 ($49,000)
Shorter delivery timelines suggest possible production boost or lower demand
The shorter wait times for Tesla Model 3 and Y orders in China could point to two main reasons: production boost and lower demand.
Giga Shanghai might have accelerated EV production further, enabling the EV giant to crank out outputs faster. The facility currently has an annual production capacity of more than 950,000 units, supplying both the Chinese and foreign markets (Australia and Japan).
However, it is also possible that Tesla is currently seeing lower customer demand for the Model 3 and Y in China.
It must also be noted that Tesla China tends to prioritize domestic orders towards the end of each quarter. Therefore, the wait time reduction could indicate Tesla’s capability to rapidly fulfill local orders if they dedicate most of the production units to Chinese buyers.
