VW first to offer ChatGPT in new EVs

Volkswagen Group formally announced in a press release on Friday that OpenAI’s chatbot and virtual assistant ChatGPT is now available in many of its models. Apart from the new Volkswagen ID. family models, the AI-based tool is also available in the new Golf, Tiguan, and Passat.

This groundbreaking integration allows VW owners to seamlessly communicate with their vehicles. It also makes Volkswagen the first major automaker to offer ChatGPT through its offerings under a partnership with tech company Cerence. This integration employs Cerence Chat Pro to generate accurate and relevant responses.

Noteworthy updates

Current Volkswagen models only allow owners to control the car’s infotainment, navigation, and climate control systems using its IDA online voice assistant.

Now, owners of the abovementioned next-gen VW models can access the ChatGPT via the brand’s IDA voice assistant, supporting multiple “new options that go far beyond the voice control previously available.”

For instance, it can now support communication using “natural language.” It can read search results out loud, cutting the need for the driver to take his eyes off the road.

In addition, it offers more information on tourist spots in a specific area and can also report past football game tournament results, among others.

ChatGPT is available in at least five languages, including  English (US and UK), Spanish, Czech, and German.

Beyond Volkswagen

Notably, tech giant Apple is also planning to integrate ChatGPT with its AI assistant Siri.

The newly announced partnership seems to have disappointed American business tycoon Elon Musk, who is also developing a similar AI-based tool under his new venture xAI.

Elon Musk even threatened to ban Apple devices across his companies if it pushes through with its planned ChatGPT integration at the iOS level due to security risks.

And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage
