Volkswagen shakes up China’s EV market with budget-friendly ID.UNYX SUV

Volkswagen’s ID.UNYX electric SUV launch in China aims to boost its market presence, offering advanced features and affordability to compete with Tesla and BYD.

German legacy automaker Volkswagen, through its new sub-brand, formally launched its new ID.UNYX electric SUV in the Chinese market on Wednesday, according to the press release.

The ID.UNYX will roll out a total of five electric vehicle models by 2026, starting with a pure electric coupe SUV of the same name.

The ID.UNYX electric SUV hit is now available in China with a price range of 209,900 yuan ($28,900) to 249,900 yuan ($34,400).

Volkswagen Anhui, a joint venture between VW and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC), manufactured the ID.UNYX electric SUV.

Design and other features

Volkswagen’s ID.UNYX electric SUV sports the ID.UX series’ golden logo. It has a closed front design complemented by the IQ. Light Matrix headlight, which consists of 13 LED sources of high beam.

The new VW electric SUV offers a five-seater configuration. It comes with a wide range of interior features, such as follows:

  • a 5.3″ LCD instrument panel
  • a 15″ 2K floating central control screen
  • an AR-HUD
  • a flat-bottom steering wheel
  • double cup holders
  • wireless charging panels on the center console
  • an AI assistant
  • nine airbags
  • 12-way electrically adjustable seats
  • Apple CarPlay, Baidu CarLife, and Huawei HiCar integration
  • rear seat foldable armrests (mid- and high-end trims)

In addition, the ID.S 5.0 OS powers the electric SUV’s operating system. It is standardly-equipped with Volkswagen’s IQ Drive safety and parking features, including the following:

  • lane change assist
  • adaptive cruise control
  • lane keep assist
  • intelligent parking assist
  • remote parking assist
  • trained parking assist (autonomous parking in common parking space)

It has five available body paint options, including Sunrise Gold, Awaking Grey, Dreamy White, Shadow Black, and Moonlight Silver.

Technical details

The Volkswagen ID.UNYX electric SUV offers three variants, including the Pro, Ultra, and Max.

This new electric SUV rides on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, supporting dimensions of 4663/1860/1610 mm and 2766 mm wheelbase.

It offers single-motor two-wheel drive and dual-motor four-wheel drive configurations. The single-motor variant yields a maximum output of 170 kW (228 hp), while the dual-motor variant delivers up to 250 kW (335 hp).

The SUV features an 82.4 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, enabling two CLTC-rated driving ranges of 621 km and 565 km, respectively.

The newly launched ID.UNYX sub-brand is a crucial part of Volkswagen’s effort to launch 34 new models in the global market by 2030. The new ID.UNYX electric SUV and the other 5 EVs in the pipeline can potentially aid the German automaker in becoming more competitive in the Chinese market.

Starting just below $30,000, the new Volkswagen ID.UNYX electric SUV is set to challenge top-selling models like the $34,400 Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto 3 in the world’s largest auto market.
