ID.2all poised to shake up EV market

Volkswagen Design Chief Andreas Mindt has just confirmed that the company has finally finished the design of the ID2all concept’s production model, according to Autocar.

It officially unveiled the concept last March, featuring an entry-level car for the mass market below the VW ID.3.

It will ride on the same modified MEB platform as the ID series models. The concept promises to deliver a driving range of up to 279 miles (450 km).

As you can observe, the concept shares several similarities to the Golf and Beetle models. However, it has contemporary tweaks as part of the electric vehicle shift.

What to expect from the production model?

Mindt teased that the production version is “even better” than the ID2all concept. After receiving positive feedback on the innovative concept, the design team became more determined to deliver the production model.

“I really like it, and it’s one of the reasons I’m so optimistic for our future.”

Volkswagen Design Chief Andreas Mindt

Mindt also shared that the upcoming ID.2 model would differ from the hatch as it will be a “more upright, more self-confident” electric car.

“It’s matching 100% to our brand values: it will be stable and likeable with our secret sauce – but in a different way.”

The design head further disclosed that the interior will sport a new design language featuring elements from the “past.”

It also has multiple drive modes, including Classic or Vintage. Classic mode is reportedly from the Beetle era, while Vintage presents a Golf-like display.

According to the German automaker, the ID.2all model is as “spacious as a Golf” but as ” inexpensive as a Polo.”

Market launch

The Volkswagen ID.2 model is expected to have a base price of $27,000 (€25,000). It seeks to compete in the mass market segment amid the growing demand for affordable EVs.

VW will finally introduce the production version by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, market sales are expected to start in 2025.

Notably, the ID.2 is only one of the ten new EVs the German brand aims to launch by 2027. Some of these models include  ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, ID.7, and ID.Buzz. It also plans to introduce an even cheaper offering, the ID.1, with a base price of approximately $21,700 (€20,000).

It would be interesting to see how VW’s new ID.2 EV will fare in the market, considering the surge of multiple new models from other players, such as the Kia EV3 and EV4, among others.
