Uber Freight announced its newly formed partnership with California-based tech firm WattEV and global supply chain solution provider CHEP for the development of a new zero-emission electric truck pilot.

Electric trucks are here & we couldn't be more excited⚡️Today, we announced our 1st electric truck pilot, partnering with @wattevinc & @CHEP to deploy electric trucks in California. Alongside shippers & carriers, we'll help drive a more sustainable future. https://t.co/8YNbCXdqLL pic.twitter.com/6NbzqnKmTa

Notably, the move marks Uber Freight’s first electric vehicle rollout to date.

About the pilot program

The pilot program will cover chosen routes in Southern California per the agreement. However, they plan to gradually increase the scope nationwide with the heavy-duty platform from WattEV.

In essence, it will capitalize on WattEV’s electric fleet and network of charging stations with Uber Freight’s extensive network of digitally connected carriers. WattEV committed to supplying Uber Freight shippers with electric trucking capacity, beginning with CHEP.

The program will significantly advance the companies’ efforts toward zero-emission freight transportation. Through this, stakeholders will get an essential understanding of the logistical challenges of electrifying freight transportation.

“This first electric truck pilot in the US, in partnership with Uber Freight and WattEV, is a step in the right direction as we move towards a net positive impact.”

Marisa Sánchez Urrea, Head of Global Supply Chain Decarbonization at CHEP’s parent firm Brambles

It is worth noting that the planned pilot program aligns with WattEV’s goal to deploy a heavy-duty charging network for e-trucks across the US. The company will capitalize on Uber Freight’s reliable platform, enabling it to schedule, track status, load KPIs, etc.

“Combining our transport business and our Truck-as-a-Service model, we are able to use Uber Freight’s digital platform to serve the shippers and their customers with our zero-emission truck routes and services.”

Salim Youssefzadeh, WattEV CEO

Indeed, electric truck adoption offers numerous benefits, including cutting carbon emissions, reducing engine fumes and noises, and shifting away from increasingly expensive non-renewable fuels.

“Electric trucks are finally here, and we’re proud to partner with WattEV to offer Uber Freight shippers even more ways to move freight more sustainably. Electric trucks will have a profound impact on logistics, and we’re excited to build the technology platform to enable their seamless integration into supply chains.”

Illina Frankiv, Uber Freight Head of Sustainability
