Luxury electric automaker Tesla previously previewed the highly awaited “$25,000 model” with a silhouette image at the company’s annual Shareholder Meeting on May 16.

Now, the project seems to be continuously progressing to reach actual production. Tesla has reportedly decided on the design of the Model 2, as per Nuevo León Governor Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda. He further disclosed that the new Giga Mexico will start construction any time, as “all the permits for the environment, energy, water, everything, is already checked.”

The Mexican Governor’s remarks align with previous reports suggesting that the Musk-led automaker will break ground at the Giga Mexico in the Summer of 2023 and unveil the Model 2.

“So, now yes, with the design finished, what we know is that they are already finishing the production lines, the software, and everything that must be ready to start the plant.

Tesla’s next-gen EV will be the world’s “best” and “economic” car

Governor Sepúlveda further intensified the anticipation among Tesla and EV enthusiasts, saying that the new model will be the “best electric and economic car in the world, and it is going to be a milestone” during their scheduled report regarding the economy of the state.

However, the development of Giga Mexico may not proceed at the same rapid rate as the Giga Shanghai in China. Several local union regulations and Chinese supply chain transfer could reportedly push the plant’s completion to 2025.

Nonetheless, previous reports suggest that the Tesla Model 2 will undergo production in the summer of 2024, aligning with the Giga Mexico’s expected completion.

The US federal tax credits of up to $7,500 and China’s $4,150 subsidy for electric vehicles can undoubtedly aid the Tesla Model 2 in becoming a “milestone” for the Musk-led company. Apart from that, CEO Musk also noted at the previous Shareholder Meeting that its two new mass-market EVs will have a production rate of 5 million units per year.

Unfortunately, Governor Sepúlveda omitted to mention any new details regarding the Model 2’s specification and design. However, it is worth mentioning that CEO Musk previously announced that the model will be “smaller, to be clear.”

Tesla’s Master Plan Part 3 presentation also revealed that the Model 2 will have LFP packs with an average capacity of 53 kWh. Interestingly, the Model 2 will also be lighter than Tesla’s current midsize models by 30%. Nonetheless, it may still be capable of a driving range of around 270 miles between chargers like the famous Model 3, regardless of the smaller battery.

When fully operational, the Giga Mexico can hit an annual production capacity of 2 million Model 2 units for US customers. Giga Shanghai will also reportedly produce the same number of units, primarily for Chinese customers who can access up to $4,150 in tax credits under the government’s US$72 billion EV subsidy package.

Considering the significant government support for electric vehicles, Tesla will undoubtedly take advantage and launch the highly-awaited mass-market model immediately in its top 2 major markets.
