American automaker Tesla has reportedly begun trial production for the revamped version of the popular Model 3 sedan, named the “Project Highland.” Chinese publication JRJ claims that the new model variant is already rolling on the manufacturing line at the Giga Texas in Shanghai.

Report highlights

Twitter/X user @liuwen_52 shared the news content on the social media platform, claiming that the Musk-led company will begin the Highland’s volume production in September. Meanwhile, customer deliveries are speculated to commence the following month.

Another account by the user @ray4tesla reposted the Twitter/X post, estimating that the Tesla Model 3 revamped version will cost approximately 200,000 yuan ($27,700).

If priced at 200K CNY, the demand will be off the charts. FYI, 2 BYD competing vehicles are:

BYD Han, starting at 209,800 CNY
BYD Seal, starting at 212,800 CNY https://t.co/h3eLsSbQzw

Presented below is the report’s translation via Google Translate:

“It is reported that Tesla’s facelifted Model 3 has already started trial production and it is expected to start mass production in September and start deliveries in October. Compared with previous expectations, this progress has been advanced. According to the estimated cost of components, the guide price of this new car is around 200,000 yuan, and it will use the 66 kWh M3P battery provided by Ningde Times. It is understood that the M3P battery may be mainly used purely with lithium manganese iron phosphate. With the early trial production of the Model 3, lithium manganese iron phosphate is expected to accelerate the release of capacity.”

Interestingly, CATL parent company Ningde Times’ renewed contract with Tesla in 2021 indicated its commitment to continue supplying the automaker with its li-ion batteries until the end of 2025.

However, it must be noted that there is currently no way to verify this report as Tesla does not operate any media relations unit.

The revamped version of the “world’s most sought-after vehicle” has been undergoing development since Q2 2022. The previous spy photos showed us that the Highland will feature new front fascia, tail lights, interior, etc. It will also utilize the automaker’s new Hardware 4.0 Autopilot computer.

As of now, we can only wait for Tesla’s official announcement or confirmation regarding the Model 3 Highland’s trial production.
