Leading American automaker Tesla has reportedly begun the volume production of the Model 3’s revamped version, Project Highland. According to Chinese content creator @ChrisZheng001, 7,000 units will roll off the production line in August and hit 10,000 units in September.

“Starting tomorrow, Gigashanghai Model 3 production line will be fully shifted to Highland production, with a target production of 7,000 this month and 10,000 next month. Production capacity is no longer hell, but ramping is still not easy.”

What’s the big deal?

The production launch for Project Highland is indeed positive news for the Musk-led company and interested customers.

Interestingly, some speculations suggest that producing the revamped Model 3 allows Tesla to cut costs owing to a new manufacturing strategy. It includes using Gigacasts to build the EV’s single large front and rear single parts. By doing so, the automaker ultimately eliminated the need to weld more than a hundred pieces.

As EV-a2z previously reported, the IDRA supplies the giant Gigacasting to Tesla for both the Cybertruck and the Highland.

The new Tesla Model 3 will feature improved interior and exterior designs and powertrain capacity. Previous reports also suggest that it would have the entry-level Model 3 RWD’s larger battery pack. It can reportedly enable a WLTP range of 550 km, which demonstrates a more than 10% improvement from the standard Model 3.

However, Tesla has yet to announce upgrades to the drive unit’s capacity. For reference, the Performance version currently generates 377 kW and a 261 km/h top speed.
