Electric vehicle giant Tesla has just obtained a fast charging award for the Model 3 Highland. Despite only having a 400V system, the electric sedan overthrew its rivals in AMCI’s “gas station test.”

AMCI’s MP6 test

The Tesla Model 3 Highland’s charging capability is getting closer to matching the gas stations’ refueling speeds, independent automotive research company AMCI revealed.

According to the press release, the analysis focuses on determining which electric vehicle models with fast-charging capabilities charge the quickest. AMCI refers to the test as “MP6,” named after the typical gas station’s refueling speed of six minutes.

“Effectively, MP6 assumes consumers should not need to alter their long-standing fueling habits—nor the amount of time they are willing to dedicate to enroute fueling.

MP6 clearly shows how many miles of range each EV can add within this essential and expected 6-minute window.”

AMCI employed the Tesla Supercharger and Magic Dock for the testing.

Tesla Model 3 Highland tops the ranking

In a significant win for the American electric vehicle giant, the Tesla Model 3 Highland doubled the score of the former leader Toyota bZ4X in the past tests.

It enabled the Tesla electric sedan to dominate this year’s test rankings with a 60.5 MP6 score, pushing the Toyota bZ4X (35.0 MP6) to the second spot.

According to the research company, one of the main factors propelling the Tesla Model 3 Highland’s robust performance was “the brief time between vehicle connection and maximum current delivery on its native Supercharger network—achieving a maximum rate as high as 174 kW within the first minute.”

Presented below are the top 10 electric vehicle models in AMCI’s MP6 tests in 2024:

Considering that the testing utilized Tesla’s Supercharger and “Magic Dock,” it would be really interesting to see how the Highland would fare in a non-Tesla network. Nonetheless, the results only highlight how having own charging network aids Tesla’s efforts to improve EV charging experience.
