In addition, Tesla has also advanced as the leading brand for US fleets, seeking to shift to electrify their fleets.

Tesla’s dominance

The latest data revealed that Tesla’s all-electric vehicle models accounted for nearly one-third of EV fleet sales in the trailing 13 months starting July 2023.

In fact, the Tesla Model 3 dominated the best-selling rankings with 28,252 unit sales. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y landed the third highest spot with sales of 11,149 units, just behind the Chevy Bolt’s 19,502 sales.

Tesla’s significant lead is unsurprising, considering that the American automaker leads the global EV production and supplies major car rental companies like Hertz.

It is also worth noting that fleet sales in the US can be “sporadic,” as noted in the report. They usually overlap with particular buying cycles. For instance, Tesla’s sales reached more than 13,500 Model 3s in US-based fleets from December 2022 to January 2023. It also reported a growth of approximately 4,300 units in both July and October 2022. Apart from that, US fleet sales have been generally low.

Rental EVs’ significance

Teslarati reported Tesla and Hertz’s partnership in 2021 that saw the Musk-led company supplying 100,000 EVs to the latter’s rental fleet.

They also initiated another partnership with Uber, adding more than 25,000 to the ridesharing platform’s fleet in early 2023.

Notably, EV rentals do not just provide a significant advantage to automakers but also to the widespread adoption of e-mobility.

It provides customers with a superior experience compared to traditional internal combustion engine-powered (ICE) vehicles. It also enables potential customers to try riding an electric car and using various charging technologies, such as Level 2 and Level 3 speed, before actually buying a new model.

Automakers and US-based fleet owners partner to offer electric vehicle owners various alternatives depending on the fleets’ demands, including charging time, range, and passenger capacity. In effect, the US electric vehicle adoption continues to progress.

It is also worth noting that Tesla’s significant lead over any other brands is not surprising. Most fleet companies favor Tesla models, considering its innovative EV offerings and advanced technologies.
