Tesla has just introduced an effective solution to early owners’ complaints about the rust spots they observed in their Cybertrucks, which are five vinyl wrap options to protect the electric pickup’s stainless body from corrosive elements.

Early Cybertruck owners report rust spots

Some owners of early Cybertruck units were already reporting rust spots in mid-February 2024, just almost three months after the delivery event last November 30.

In response, Tesla explained that the rust spots are “normal.” According to Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill’s X post, the rust spots are only “surface contamination” that owners can clean off easily.

A lot of MSM coverage about rust. None show actual photos, usually a good indicator to question the accuracy. Side by side with a painted vehicle, this is surface contamination.

Tesla’s solution

Previous reports suggest that the orange spots observed by early Cybertruck owners may be mere rail dust caused by transportation on trains.

Tesla indicated in its owner manual to “immediately remove corrosive substances (such as grease, oil, bird droppings, tree resin, dead insects, tar spots, road salt, industrial fallout, etc.)” to solve such rusting issues.

Simply put, owners must clean their Cybertruck units to fix the orange rust spots concerns.

Tesla offers five vinyl wrap options

Apart from cleaning off the rust spots, Tesla is encouraging current and future Cybertruck owners to avail vinyl wraps to protect the vehicle’s stainless steel surface. However, it is only apparently available in four Tesla service centers in California.

As per Tesla’s official online shop, there are five color options, including:

  • Satin Abyss Blue
  • Satin Rose Gold
  • Slip Grey
  • Satin Ceramic White
  • Satin Stealth Black

Tesla develops the Cybertruck’s vinyl wraps using a self-healing urethane-based film, similar to the Tesla Model Y and 3.

The Musk-led company claims these cutting-edge wraps are twofold thicker than most third-party vinyl wraps.

However, the prices may set you back, starting from $6,000 to $6,500 (including installation). Therefore, the clear satin vinyl wrap is the most cost-efficient option, costing $5,000.
