FSD coming to Cybertruck in August

Tesla CEO Elon Musk disclosed that the Cybertruck will finally get the highly awaited Supervised FSD v12.5 in August 2024.

The announcement came in response to a question raised during the segment of the X Takeover event in San Luis Obispo, California. Tesla Owners Silicon Valley leaders John Stringer and Kelvin Gee facilitated the  Q&A session with the Tesla boss, which lasted slightly more than an hour.

“I think that should be coming out in August.”

John Stringer remarked that the said date was “technically two weeks” away, prompting CEO Musk to elaborate.

“Yeah. At some point in the next two to four-ish weeks, it should work on the Cybertruck. I’m not sure the exact timing, because we just have to test it and make sure it works well…”

This estimated timeline roughly translates to a mid-late August rollout.

FSD v12.5 advances

The latest FSD v12.5 will upgrade Tesla’s autonomous driving technology with a single neural network for city navigation and enhanced driver monitoring.

It enhances the FSD system’s lane changes, intersection navigation, and overall performance in urban environments. Its vision-based driver monitoring was also improved to allow drivers to wear sunglasses, ensuring driver attention for safety.

“…12.5 is where a lot of things come together, where you’ve got the… we upgrade the highway stack to the latest version, so it’s… you don’t have the old highway stack and the new city stack.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk

This update comes alongside the software version 2024.20.15, which offers a wide range of features beyond the core advancements in autonomous driving, such as follows (per Notebook Check):

  • faster A/C cooling
  • adaptive headlights for improved visibility on curves
  • Beach Buggy Racing at Supercharger locations
  • Autopilot attention warning
  • detailed location sharing information
  • ability to filter explicit content on TIDAL, etc.

Rollout strategy

Tesla reportedly started deploying the FSD v12.5.1 to select non-employee vehicles on Friday.

It is worth noting that CEO Musk recently clarified that they will focus on rolling out the update to HW4-equipped Tesla Model Y units.

Once Tesla determined that the software version was operating well on those units, CEO Musk promised that Tesla would start launching the software update to other models.

We are focusing on just Model Y with HW4 for the initial release. Make sure that works well, then broaden.

This has the 5X increase in parameters.

HW3 would run the same parameter count, but requires extra work to optimize the code.
