It is indeed a remarkable feat, considering that Tesla only hit its first millionth 4680 battery cell production milestone in January 2022. For reference, here is the timeline:

  • January 2022 – 1 millionth cell production
  • June 2023 – 10 millionth cell production
  • October 2023 – 20 millionth cell production
  • June 2024 – 50 millionth cell production

What’s special about 4680 battery cells?

Tesla named its 4680 battery cells after their dimensions of 46 mm in diameter and 80 mm in height.

These innovative battery cells power Tesla’s key electric vehicle offerings, including the Model Y electric crossover and the Cybertruck electric pickup.

Tesla developed these battery cells to offer higher energy density and power capacity, which improves the electric vehicle’s performance and driving range.

Amazing !

Implication on Cybertruck production

The Tesla Cybertruck requires approximately 1,360 4680 battery cells for its 123kWh battery pack, according to Drive Tesla Canada.

Therefore, the Musk-led EV maker is cranking out enough units to support the production of almost 2,800 Cybertrucks per month, surpassing the factory’s current production rate.

These remarkable production rates support Tesla’s remarks during the Q1 2024 Earnings Call that the 4680 battery cell is no longer a Cybertruck production bottleneck.

Tesla seems capable now of building a stockpile it can tap not only for manufacturing the stainless steel pickup but also for other EVs it plans to equip with 4680 battery cells.
