Tesla has successfully achieved their goal at the Giga Texas plant in expanding the production of the Tesla Model Y.
According to Whole Mars Catalog, it has reached its production rate of 1,000 cars per week; An achievement that is also made by the Tesla Giga-Berlin Brandenburg plant earlier this June 2022.
The news came from one of Tesla’s employees that shared a photo on Snapchat with the logo, the number of productions, and the signature of employees who are a part of it.
They started in April and Tesla’s estimated time to achieve 1000 production per week is around 4 months.
They have visualized increasing the rate above 250,000 Tesla Model Y per year.
According to the report, the availability of the 4680-type cylindrical battery that is used in all the versions of Tesla Model Y became the main hindrance as to why Tesla started to produce Model Y powered by a different battery which is the 2170- type cylindrical battery cell. The same battery that is used in California.
There are two versions that Tesla produces at the same time:
Tesla Model Y AWD: 4680-type cells and structural battery pack
279 miles (449 km) of EPA range (19″ wheels) or 269 miles (433 km) with 20″ wheels
Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD: 2170-type cells
330 miles (531 km) of EPA range (19″ wheels) or 318 miles (512 km) with 20″ wheels
In addition, the main goal is to increase production using the 4680-type model but right now using a 2170-type has become an alternative for production.
There is no specified time as to when they will be able to produce more 4680 type battery packs but 250,000 units per year with 70kwh per pack, they will need a lot which is said to be about half of the manufacturing capacity of tesla in Nevada.
