American electric automaker Rivian finally offered us a first glimpse at its upcoming “affordable” electric SUV, the R2, in a 34-sec video teaser before officially revealing the model on March 7.

The R2 will do for Rivian what the Model 3 did for Tesla:

I never considered a Model X until I reserved my Model 3. That convinced me to visit a store and check out what Teslas were all about. I'm now on my third Tesla.

Video teaser highlights

Rivian’s newly released video teaser revealed the face of the R2 electric SUV, showcasing the lighting signature that looks similar to the already available R1 EVs.

As you can observe, the new R2 does not differ from the brand’s iconic light designs. It sports the American automaker’s full-width front light bar. It also maintained the rounded headlights, making it easier to navigate the road. However, it features three LED modules per headlight rather than four like the R1S.

Rivian omitted to reveal the new model’s rear end. However, for reference, the R1S electric SUV and R1T electric truck both have full-width taillights across the back.

What’s currently known about the R2?

Apart from the additional insights from the teaser video, Rivian previously hinted at some details about the new R2 e-SUV. The Rivian R2 will apparently be smaller and cheaper than the R1S.

According to CEO RJ Scaringe, the Rivian R2 may cost approximately $45,000 to $50,000. This potential price range puts the new model above its closest rivals, including the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

The Rivian boss claims that the new R2 model will be the automaker’s “Tesla Model 3 moment” due to the potential production challenges it may face to meet the demand for this upcoming cheaper model.

Timeline

Rivian plans to invest $5 billion to build a new Stanton Springs manufacturing plant in Georgia to support the production of the R2 electric SUV.

Rivian has yet to reveal more details about the new model’s powertrain, output, and range, probably becoming available in its official reveal early next month. It will also start accepting reservations for the R2 as soon as it debuts, with a potential market launch in 2026.
