Zero-emission truck provides charging solutions

Mullen developed the PowerUP zero-emission truck with three key innovative features, including the following:

  • Level 3 DC fast charging
  • Off-grid AC power
  • Micro-grid connectivity

Mullen aims to deploy this new Mullen THREE-based mobile charging solution to areas with limited or no access to power, potentially increasing job site versatility.

The PowerUp has a 160 kW battery pack featuring a modular design that can yield up to 1 MWh wherever it is needed. It includes two 60 kW DCFC ports, 2 20 kW L2 AC chargers, or a pair of 12V jumper terminals for getting internal combustion engine-powered vehicles going again.

“We’re constantly innovating and adapting to meet the evolving needs of the industry. The feedback on the initial PowerUP concept was overwhelmingly positive, but the market is clearly looking for a zero-emission solution. By leveraging our all-electric Mullen THREE, the new PowerUP delivers recharging at a higher level of scalability and performance while offering zero emissions for both the vehicle and power unit.”

David Michery, Mullen Automotive CEO and Chairman

Suitable applications

Mullen’s new PowerUp can support a job site with no grid connection or even a disaster relief initiative.

The American automaker indicated in a previous press release that the PowerUp can provide immediate recharging for electric vehicles, whether on roadside assistance/emergency response or power generation at temporary sites.

In addition, it can apparently serve as a backup power source.

Key specifications

Presented below are Mullen PowerUP’s key specifications:

  • Class 5 Bi-Fuel (Gasoline – P/RLP) Cabover Chassis
  • GVWR – 19,500 lbs
  • Wheelbase – 150 inches
  • Featuring 120kW Onboard Generator Duel Fuel (propane/natural gas) Vehicle
  • 1 x 120kW Level 3 DC, 950V Fast Charge or 2 x 60kW Level 3 DC
  • 4 x 7.2kW Level 2 Chargers
  • ~150 Gallons of Total Onboard Propane Storage

Mullen’s PowerUp undergoes development at the existing High Energy Facility in Fullerton, California. According to the company, its decision to source the battery packs from Romeo Power have boosted the truck’ development as an 100% battery-based mobile charging station.

All that said, Mullen’s new mobile charging platform offers a versatile and adaptable solution for certain situations where traditional power sources are unavailable or inconvenient. They could contribute to a more robust and reliable charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and ensure power availability in critical situations.
