A competitor to electric vehicles like the Tesla Model Y or the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is anticipated to be unveiled by the Chinese automaker MG in Australia in mid-decade.

During a preview event for the MG 4 electric car in Australia, MG executives revealed to the local media that a local launch of the Marvel R mid-size electric SUV is “on the cards,” possibly alongside the Cyberster electric sports car.

MG’s next-gen Marvel R

The automaker confirmed that the next-generation Marvel R would be coming to Australia.

The current model, a rebranded variant of a vehicle from another brand possessed by MG’s parent company SAIC Motor, must be produced in right-hand drive.

However, reports from the right-hand-drive UK market claim that it is due in dealerships in 2024 or 2025. MG has yet to indicate when the new Marvel R will arrive in local showrooms.

The head of marketing for MG Australia recently made comments to the Australian media about the upcoming rollout of the company’s future models.

“It will be a pretty exciting next 12 months.”

Rick Whaite, the head of marketing for MG Australia

Drive reports that rumors have been circulating in the United Kingdom that the next-generation MG Marvel R might be rebranded under a different name. If this happens, the vehicle might be designed by MG rather than being a rebadge of a model produced by its sister brand, Roewe (or Rover).

In European countries with left-hand drive, the top-of-the-line versions of the current MG Marvel R use three electric motors, one at the front and two at the rear, for a total system output of 212 kW and 665 Nm.

According to MG, the 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 4.9 seconds, the top speed is limited to 200 km/h, and the claimed driving range from a 70 kWh battery pack is 370 kilometers in European WLTP testing.

These specifications will likely be carried into the new model if it utilizes the dedicated electric-car platform of the new MG 4 hatchback. This platform is designed for single-motor, rear-wheel-drive, or dual-motor, all-wheel-drive automobiles.

MG’s biggest model in the electric-car range

The Marvel R will be the biggest model in MG’s electric-car range, placing it above the ZS EV small SUV, which is getting on in years and is based on underpinnings that are six years old, and the MG 4, which is a small car.

The forthcoming Cyberster electric roadster – or MGC, which is scheduled to be revealed this year – may take over the role of the flagship model for the MG range of automobiles.

Right-hand drive versions of the Cyberster will be manufactured, and it is possible to be sold in Australia.

It is scheduled to debut in UK showrooms early in the following year, which may correspond to the first arrivals in Australia occurring later in 2024.
