The move is part of the company’s efforts to intensify its electrification initiatives and improve the country’s charging infrastructures.

Plan details

Mercedes currently operates the largest charging network than any other luxury EV maker in India, the report claims.

It partnered with operators to open its charging network and solutions for its Indian customers. Notably, the company’s ultra-fast chargers have a maximum capacity of 180 kWh. Meanwhile, its standard fast chargers can support up to 60 kWh.

In total, Mercedes offers over 2,000 charging outlets across the world. Of that total, 140 units are deployed in India across its 25+ cities. Notably, 40 of them are fast chargers from 180 kWh to 60 kWh capacity.

“…we will be extending this entire charging facility, not only for Mercedes customers but for all brands, luxury and mass, so that they can come in and charge their cars at a faster pace at our fast charging network.”

Santos Iyer, Mercedes-India CEO & MD

To further improve customer charging experience, Mercedes also launched a mobile app that enables all EV customers to access its chargers in the country regardless of the brand. According to the report, the app offers an additional 150 superchargers for customers.

The model has a base price of Rs 1.39 crore (all India ex-showroom), according to Indian Express. It offers customers a 10-year battery warranty and servicing once in two years.

It can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. It has a maximum output of 402 horsepower (combined) and 633 lb-ft (combined) of torque. It also enables an EPA-estimated driving range of 260 miles, MB USA indicates.

“We are strengthening our BEV portfolio by launching the EQE 500 4MATIC S V. This is an important addition to our BEV portfolio offering segment-leading luxury appointments, technology and connectivity, among others.”

Santos Iyer, Mercedes-India CEO & MD

Mercedes’ presence in India

Mercedes is currently the country’s leading premium automaker, Autocar Pro reports. Its electric vehicle sales reached approximately 450 units in the first half of the year.

It sells four EV models at varying prices to tap into a wider customer base. Now, the brand aims to hit the 1,000 sales milestone in 2024 with an EV penetration rate of 5% to 7%.

“We have to be patient here and not configure our product and strategy based on volumes, because that would be a cardinal mistake as our customers are a trendsetter, they will show it to their family and peers, hence our cars have to be equipped with the best features and maximum range.”

Apart from opening its charging network to all EV owners in India, the company also shared its efforts in educating people about charging solutions. It primarily trains luxury EV drivers to manage range anxiety, charging solutions, etc.

Mercedes’ efforts will significantly aid the country in accelerating the shift to clean mobility. It will also strengthen the local charging infrastructure to support the growing number of EVs on the road.
