Self-driving sensor maker Luminar announced on February 22 that it has committed to equipping its innovative software and sensors on Mercedes-Benz‘s future models. The long-time partners aim to develop a safe and enhanced autonomous driving system under an expanded multi-billion dollar partnership.

Announcing the expansion of our @MercedesBenz partnership. “I am convinced that Luminar is a great partner to help realize our vision and roadmap for automated and accident-free driving.” – Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer, Mercedes Benz. https://t.co/WiS6G1G5rH $LAZR pic.twitter.com/IYX2wrtfL5

“In a first step, we have introduced a Level 3 system in our top line models. Next, we want to implement advanced automated driving features on a broader scale within our portfolio. I am convinced that Luminar is a great partner to help realize our vision and roadmap for automated and accident-free driving.”

Markus Schäfer, Board of Management Member of Mercedes Benz Group AG and CTO, Development & Procurement

Undoubtedly, it will advance the safety and technical features of Mercedes’ conditionally automated driving systems, enticing potential buyers to embrace the technology and its upcoming models.

Expanded partnership

Luminar will provide its newest Iris lidar for the German automaker’s planned conditionally automated driving system for the latter’s next-generation portfolio. Notably, this new venture follows the two companies’ two years of strategic partnership.

Interestingly, the Mercedes’ enhanced system will empower the vehicles to offer the following features:

  • expanded hands-free driving on a highway at a maximum speed of 130kph (81mph)
  • enhanced driver-assist features in urban areas

Furthermore, the next-gen Iris lidar will also mainstream the design incorporation with a “sleeker” profile.

“Mercedes’ standards for vehicle safety and performance are among the highest in the industry, and their decision to double down on Luminar reinforces that commitment. We are now set to enable the broadest scale deployment of this technology in the industry. It’s been an incredible sprint so far, and we are fully committed to making this happen – together with Mercedes-Benz.”

Austin Russell, Luminar CEO, and Founder

Luminar’s shares surged over 25% following the partnership expansion announcement.

Unfortunately, Luminar has not yet revealed the production volumes. However, we know it will be “more than an order of magnitude bigger” than the 2022 transaction with the German automaker.

Nonetheless, we expect the lidar maker to disclose its next-gen Iris lidar system in its Q4 and FY 2022 results in the coming days.

At Luminar Day we will unveil our technology roadmap, as well as our near-term and long-term financial plan, including Q4 and full-year 2022 financials. Register at https://t.co/owkrfBvIy4 $LAZR pic.twitter.com/dz8Sqj3EBG
