Owosso, Michigan, Marshfield, and Wisconsin electric vehicle drivers are the first to benefit from GM’s Dealer Community Charging Program.

.@GM is going to install as many as 40,000 EV chargers in mostly rural parts of America. Level 2 chargers, not rapid DC chargers, but focused on places people will already be parked for 2+ hours. And I must add: Inflation Reduction Act subsidizes this too!https://t.co/D53U5Dqwyv

The new level 2 (AC) charger deployments are the first in 40,000 new plug-in points planned rollout, which GM says will almost double the number of public charging stations in Canada and the US, according to Ars Technica.

The automaker announced the program in October 2021 and has had nearly 1,000 of its Chevrolet dealerships sign on to the initiative, designed to increase charger access in underserved, urban, and rural locations.

GM would provide dealerships with up to ten 19.2 kW chargers to be installed in the communities they serve. The chargers are available to any electric vehicle driver, not just those who drive GM’s electric models.

Nearly 90 percent of the US population lives within 10 miles of a GM dealership. Our dealers are deeply involved and trusted in their communities and are well-positioned to determine locations that expand access to EV charging, including at small businesses, entertainment venues, schools, and other popular destinations.

Hoss Hassani, vice president of GM EV Ecosystem

Hassani added that their dealers are a crucial enabler of their fully-electric future and, in various cases, would be the drive for EV adoption in communities that would have limited infrastructure. With their ability to service electric vehicle drivers in North America, their dealers help make charging possible across the continent.

Notably, Wheeler’s Chevrolet in Wisconsin was the first dealership to sign on the initiative and set up chargers in two parks, a sports complex, and a library, among other areas in Marshfield.

We’re excited to be the first dealership in the nation to have these chargers. This will help put Marshfield on the map in terms of EV leadership. This is a great stop for commuters to check out our community and see all that Marshfield has to offer.

Next installation in other states in the upcoming months

Young Cadillac Chevrolet in Michigan followed and installed its first charger at a healthcare center in Owosso. General Motors says the following installations should occur in Indiana, Ohio, Washington, Kansas, Georgia, Delaware, and Illinois in the upcoming months.

General Motors & EVgo program

On the other hand, GM has another program, together with EVgo, which is currently installing 5,250 DC fast chargers by 2025, which includes 2,000 fast chargers at Pilot and Flying J travel centers.
