Smart, a joint venture formed by the Geely Group and Mercedes-Benz, is gearing up to introduce its new Smart #5 electric SUV. Ahead of its market launch, the Chinese regulator revealed key details about the new Smart EV on Thursday.

Smart #5 leaked

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the homologation filling of Smart #5 on Thursday, CarNewsChina.com reported. For those unaware, it is a crucial step for vehicles seeking to obtain a sales license in the Chinese market.

As revealed in the document, the Smart #5 is a nearly Tesla Model Y-sized electric SUV. It is expected to serve as the Smart brand’s most potent offering to date.

Design

Smart’s upcoming #5 electric SUV offers four color options and four powertrain variants.

It is 4705 mm long, 1920 mm wide, and 1705 mm tall, indicating that the electric SUV will not be compact. It also has a wheelbase of 2900 mm.

It has five doors and five seats, with two wheel size options: 18 inches or 21 inches. In addition, it has a curb weight of 2,450 kg for the top-tier trim.

It has a sporty exterior design, making it more attractive to modern car buyers. It features black arches and rugged fenders at the front.

Previous reports suggest that Smart #5 will ride on 800V architecture, potentially offering 4C-rated charging. Therefore, it can support fast charging to reach a full battery in just 15 minutes. The longest-range trim will reportedly feature a 100 kWh battery, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 700 km.

Geely Group and Mercedes-Benz’s JV have yet to announce the official launch date of the upcoming Smart #5. However, local reports expect it to hit the market in the fourth quarter of the year.
