Ford CEO Jim Farley said that the company wants to sell more electric vehicles globally than Tesla.
Ford is trying to catch up with Tesla in the global EV market. The company has been making some significant investments in electric vehicles. On April 26, Jim Farley, Ford’s CEO, announced that Ford Motors has plans to challenge Tesla as a global leader in the EV market.
During the product launch event for the electric F-150 Lightning pick-up, Farley said, “We plan to challenge Tesla and all comers to become the top EV maker in the world,” he also said, “That’s something that no one would have believed just two years ago from us. They’re going to look at this truck and believe it.”
However, Ford did not put a timeframe of when the automaker will surpass Tesla. He instead said that it would come down to product execution over the next four years and said that Ford has “every intention” of being the top electric pick-up maker globally. In line with this, Farley stated, “All we can control is the next four years, the next cycle of product,”
The automaker said that it has plans to have the capacity to produce 2 million EVs globally by 2026. It also reported that Ford had expanded the size of its Lightning factory from its original plans due to unexpected high demand. The F-150 Lightning has 200,000 reservations and is expected to build 150,000 trucks annually by 2023.
