BYD and Australia’s service station operator Ampol have recently announced a partnership on public and at-home charging solutions, as per Car Expert. The partnership aims to boost electric vehicle adoption in Australia by removing “range anxiety” through its technologies.

BYD and Ampol have separate ambitions

BYD aims to provide customers with convenient home and on-road charging solutions, eventually dominating Australia’s electric vehicle sector.

Meanwhile, Ampol aims to enter the profitable home- and fleet-charging wallbox sector to expand its business and future-proof it. Notably, it has already installed a network of public chargers partially funded by the government.

The partnership’s agreement

The partnership agreed to allow BYD customers to access the following AmpCharge’s services:

·       home charging solutions available at dealers

·       subscription packages for the usage of public charge sites

·       business charge options for fleet operators

“Ampol is Australia’s leader in transport fuels and has embarked on a strategy to become the Australian leader in EV charging,” said CEO and managing director of EVDirect Luke Todd.

“With the ongoing rollout of AmpCharge across Ampol forecourts and at destinations like shopping centres along with the ability to deliver charging in the home, BYD customers can feel confident they will be able to charge their EV wherever they need.

“Being able to partner with like-minded companies to help everyday Australians and businesses transition to future fuels and energy solutions, is at the very core of BYD’s plans to enable more Australians to have access to and benefit from driving high quality electric vehicles in an affordable and convenient manner.”

As Ampol continues to roll out AmpCharge, CEO and managing director Matthew Halliday expressed excitement about the company’s partnership with “a global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing.”

“The ongoing roll out of AmpCharge is gathering momentum, with an initial commitment to roll out new fast charging infrastructure to almost 140 locations, including both forecourt and at-destination charging sites. We are also developing our plans for a home and business charging offer,” he said.

“We know fast charging at our retail sites and elsewhere is going to play an important role to reduce range anxiety and provide Australians with the confidence they need to transition to EVs, and this partnership with BYD will further extend our opportunity to support the uptake of battery electric vehicles across Australia.”

Perth Now reported thatthe partnership comes one week before the National Electric Vehicle Strategy consultation paper’s deadline. It was also after announcements to deploy 1100 EV charging points across NSW and Victoria.

Despite starting from a low foundation, sales of electric vehicles are surging in Australia. To further encourage people to join the electric vehicle drive, charging infrastructures must accommodate the number of electric vehicles in the country.
