American multinational tech giant Amazon now has more than 15,000 electric delivery vans in its platform in the United States, marking a significant boost to its target of 100,000 units by 2030.

Amazon accelerates green delivery with 15K e-vans in service

In hindsight, Amazon ordered a total of 100,000 electric vans from Rivian in 2019 to support its push for green delivery, Electrive reported.

Of that total, Amazon has already deployed over 15,000 electric vans in the US so far since the rollout in 2022. The deployment is apparently less progressive in Europe, with only over 300 e-vans for Germany last year. It hinted at the time that these new deployments would join “a fleet of thousands of electric vans already in operation” in the region. The company has not yet released an update yet since then.

Amazon has deployed over 15,000 custom electric delivery vans across the U.S.

By 2030, they aim to electrify their entire 100,000+ fleet—10 years ahead of schedule.

The Climate Pledge

Amazon’s 100,000 electric delivery vans deployment target is part of “The Climate Pledge” it co-founded in 2019.

Amazon expects this initiative to help it achieve net-zero carbon by 2040.

“Our 2024 Sustainability Report underscores our unwavering commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Electric vehicles (play) a pivotal role in our strategy.”

Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO

In order to hit these ambitious targets, the company partnered with Rivian to supply state-of-the-art delivery electric delivery vans for its platform.

The future deployment of the 100,000 ordered electric delivery vans will enable Amazon to cut millions of metric tons of carbon per year.

Amazon’s electrification progress

Impressively, Amazon’s Rivian-made electric delivery vans have already delivered over 800 million packages to American customers in the US.

In order to support its growing electric van fleet, Amazon has also deployed more than 17,000 EV chargers across 120+ delivery stations nationwide.

Amazon is also eyeing the potential of other electric vehicle alternatives like bikes and drones to further accelerate its sustainability push. In 2023, the company has already hit its target of using 100% renewable energy sources for its electricity demand.

In 2019, we set a goal to match 100% of the electricity we consumed across Amazon’s global operations – including our data centers, corp buildings, grocery stores, and fulfillment centers – with renewable energy by 2030.
