The global shift to electric vehicles continues to progress as governments and automakers make collaborative efforts to promote green technology. However, their prices remain higher than those of their gas-powered competitors, impeding the wider uptake.

It must be noted that some of the electric vehicles in the rankings are mid-range configurations, which require an extra cost over their base variants. Nonetheless, their prices are still competitive compared to other models in the market.

EV industry grows

The electric vehicle market is currently the fastest-growing segment in the automotive industry, with experts forecasting them to cross the 10% threshold in 2024.

Tesla remains the market leader in the US, with a 55% share of overall electric vehicle sales last year. Other automakers, including BMW, Mercedes, and Audi, attempted to match Tesla’s pace with solid sales performance in the same period. In addition, other legacy automakers like Ford, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and Volvo enjoyed record sales last year.

BEV sales increased 40% year-on-year to 317,168 units in the fourth quarter of 2023, accounting for a notable portion of the total 3.8 million light-duty vehicle sales in the US.

All that said, this successive growth in the electric vehicle industry, particularly in terms of pricing and range, will undoubtedly accelerate the global shift to clean mobility.
