The planned U.S. EV plant will be built near its existing plants for the Hyundai and Kia brands.
South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co. has plans to build a new electric vehicle manufacturing plant in the United States and reportedly had talks with officials from Georgia. The facility will be built near existing plants for the Hyundai and Kia brands.
Hyundai is negotiating for a site along I-16 in Bryan County near Savannah. The plant plans to hire 8,500, people familiar with the deal told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Monday. However, projected costs and other details were not disclosed.
“We are excited to announce a new EV plant plan in the United States soon, but we do not have details to share at this stage,” Hyundai Motor Group said in a statement first reported by Reuters.
If finalized, the new Georgia facility would serve both Hyundai and Kia as the brands move to roll out a pair of fully electric SUVs – the Ioniq 7 and EV9 – aimed at the U.S. market, the three people with knowledge of the plans told Reuters.
This announcement was made at a time when the Biden administration has been looking for EV investments that would create jobs and drive clean-energy goals. The investment will also be good for Georgia as it pushes to establish itself as a regional hub for the emerging EV industry.
It can be recalled in an earlier report that Georgia has aided Rivian in building an EV facility plant in the state. The recent deals will bring thousands of manufacturing jobs and stimulate the economy in Georgia.
