Tesla plans to make the Shanghai factory its “largest vehicle export hub.”
Tesla has confirmed that it plans to build a second plant in Shanghai. It will be built near its existing Giga Shanghai.
In a recent letter that Tesla sent to authorities on May 1 and was obtained by Reuters, the automaker thanked Shanghai officials and how Lingang Group had arranged buses to transport Tesla workers and its suppliers to the factory. Tesla was shut down for 22 days due to COVID-19 lockdowns.
Tesla also mentioned in the letter the expansion plans of its Shanghai facility. It was stated in the letter: “The company will build a new plant on nearby land in the same area, which is poised to add an annual capacity of 450,000 cars, including Model 3s and Model Ys, becoming “the world’s largest vehicle export hub.”—as reported by electrek.
Once the new plant is fully operational, Tesla will have the capacity to produce up to 1 million cars per year once the expansion is completed. The timeline for the expansion is still unclear.
There were already reports back in February that Tesla was looking to expand its facility in Shanghai.
Tesla’s Shanghai facility—also known as Gigafactory 3, makes Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. In China, Giga Shanghai delivered 321,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles to customers last year.
