NIO’s new electric models to launch in Europe on June 15

Chinese automaker NIO will reportedly launch its new electric vehicles in Europe starting June 15, as displayed on its official English-language website.

“Brand new NIO models are coming. June 15, 19:00 CEST.”

    NIO

NIO also encouraged customers to “Join us online and get a preview experience of the brand new NIO models www.nio.com #inspiredbylife,” which comes along whenever one clicks the “Add to Calendar” button.

NIO to debut the ET5 Touring

CnEVPost suggests that NIO will launch the new ET5 Touring at the said event on June 15. Apparently, the model has often been spotted on European roads and in China for the past two months.

The established China-based publication also reported car blogger @肉肉爸比ev’s Weibo post yesterday, claiming that the model had been discreetly arriving in the automaker’s stores in China.

The Chinese blogger further asserted that the model would arrive at NIO’s showrooms tonight. Meanwhile, interested customers can apparently view it starting on June 10. However, @肉肉爸比ev did not provide any additional details.

In hindsight, the automaker already announced plans to launch the ET5 Touring variant in Europe, saying it is specially designed for the European market.

It is also interesting to note that NIO indicated the word “models” instead of just “model,” which hints at a possible debut of more than one EV model at the upcoming event.

That said, NIO may also introduce its new ES6 model to European customers alongside the new ET5 variant.

  • NIO to begin German delivery operations for its ET5 model by the end of March

NIO to begin German delivery operations for its ET5 model by the end of March

Chinese electric automaker NIO will officially start delivering its ET5 model in Germany on March 31, 2023.

The schedule aligns with the company’s initial commitment to start European deliveries of the electric sedan in the third month of the year.

Interestingly, NIO appears to take advantage of the German delivery operation to introduce the ET5 first mover marketing campaign.

NIO offers incentives for first ET5 customers

The Chinese automaker will offer a complimentary NOMI Mate voice assistance system and electric folding trailer hitch amounting to 1,800 euros for the first customers to take delivery of the NIO ET5 model, CnEVPost reports citing an article from the NIO App.

Early orders for the ET5 will also be offered with the same incentives. Per the report, NIO employees will begin communicating with customers in the following days.

German pricing for the NIO ET5

The NIO ET5 has a base price of 47,500 euros in Germany, plus battery costs, per its online configurator

However, that amount can still further drop as an environmental discount is currently available worth 4,500 euros.

Apart from that, customers can also receive a 0.25% tax credit for commercial use, which was first enacted in Germany on January 1, 2019.

“With the launch of the NIO ET5, we are pleased to expand the NIO portfolio in the German market as well as our target group appeal.

With the mid-size sedan NIO ET5, we are specifically expanding our electric mobility segment in Germany, creating broader user access to the NIO community thanks to an attractive equipment and price package.”

NIO celebrates the production of its 300,000th electric car

Chinese automaker NIO proudly announced another milestone of successfully producing its 300,000th electric car at its production plant in NeoPark, as per Drive Tesla Canada.

As seen on NIO’s official Tweet above, the commemorative vehicle is a blue NIO ET5 mid-size sedan, which was introduced in September.

In just one calendar year, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer more than doubled its output. NIO’s 200,000th vehicle rolled off its production line on April 26. That considered, the automaker produced the subsequent 100,000 units within just eight months.

    NIO’s presence in China

Remarkably, NIO held a 27.4% market share in November in its homeland, representing a significant increase from just 4.9% in 2019. Furthermore, it reports that NIO models dominated the BEV segment by 70% from January to October.

    Global footprint

NIO has erected 395 NIO Spaces and NIO Houses across the world. Apart from that, it has also launched 1,263 battery-swapping stations and 12,785 charging piles.

The Chinese automaker currently offers six models, including the following:

NIO ET5 climbs one place in November’s top 10 list of China’s best-selling premium sedans

The NIO ET5 had 1,030 retail sales in October, which put it in 10th place on the CPCA’s top 10 list of best-selling premium sedans in China. Remarkably, it continued to improve since its first full delivery month, climbing to 9th place with 2,968 retail sales in November, as per CnEVPost.

NIO President and cofounder Qin Li predicted on August 26 that within a year, monthly sales of the ET5 would surpass those of the gasoline-powered BMW 3 Series in China. However, that prediction did not materialize this time as BMW 3 Series’ retail sales in the county earned second place with 11,723 units in November.

    Pricing

This premium electric sedan is reportedly the most affordable offering from the Chinese automaker NIO. Its base price is RMB 328,000 or about $ 47,140 before subsidies.

The NIO ET7 also got in the top 10 list

NIO’s flagship ET7 retained its 8th position for the second month in a row, with 3,180 retail sales in November. It is worth noting that NIO has only started delivering the ET7 on March 28, but it has already been a consistent placeholder in CPCA’s list.

On the other hand, it ranked 8th place on CPCA’s best-selling premium sedans list from January to November, with 21,667 retail sales.

    NIO overall sales in November

The Chinese automaker sold a record-breaking 14,178 vehicles in November, of which 4,897 were ES7s. Remarkably, it landed in ninth place in the CPCA’s recently released ranking of premium SUV sales.

NIO presently offers the following models for sale in China:

    ModelPlatform
    ES8 NT 1.0 platform
    ES6 NT 1.0 platform
    EC6 NT 1.0 platform
    ES7 NT 2.0 platform

    ET5 NT 2.0 platform

The data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) can help prospective customers determine which EVs are selling the best in the market. It will give them an idea about the most competitive and reasonably priced options currently available. Having said that, it is a huge honor for Chinese automakers like NIO to be included in the list.

  • NIO EV sales set a new record in November 2022

NIO EV sales set a new record in November 2022

Chinese automaker NIO reportedly set a new monthly record with 14,178 electric vehicle sales in November, as per InsideEVs. Notably, this figure represents a 30% YoY increase.

It is worth noting that the November results are the automaker’s sixth straight five-digit record. That said, there is a high possibility that December’s results will deliver even higher sales figures.

NIO car sales in November 2022

China accounts for the vast majority of NIO sales.

NIO crossover/SUV sales fell by 26% YoY to 8,003 in November. Meanwhile, NIO’s new sedan category grew to a record-breaking 6,175 units.

Furthermore, the three newest models accounted for a large percentage of NIO’s sales last month, approximately 80%. The ES7 sold 4,897 units, ET7 sold 3,207 units, and the ET5 sold 2,968 units.

    YoY sales results:

    · Crossover/SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES7, ES8): 8,003 (down 26% year-over-year)

     including 4,897 ES7

    · Sedans (ET5, ET7): 6,175 (new)

     including 3,207 ET7 and 2,968 ET5

    · Total: 14,178 (up 30% year-over-year)

    YTD sales results:

NIO has sold more than 106,000 electric vehicles worldwide so far this year:

    · Crossover/SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES7, ES8) YTD: 80,756 (down 0.2% year-over-year)

    · Sedans (ET5, ET7) YTD: 25,915 (new)

    · Total YTD: 106,671 (up 32% year-over-year)

As per the report, the Chinese automaker sold 273,741 EVs in total, including more than 117,000 in the previous 12 months.

    NIO’s EV portfolio

NIO currently offers six electric vehicle models: the EC6, ES6, ES7, ES8, ET5, and ET7.

Notably, the JAC-NIO Advanced Manufacturing Center in Hefei produces all other than the ET5. Therefore, the automaker’s second factory at NeoPark is where the ET5 is produced.

On the other hand, the first-gen platform is the foundation for the EC6, ES6, and ES8. Meanwhile, the NT 2.0 platform is the foundation for ES7, ET5, and ET7.

    Global expansion

It is not surprising that NIO aims to penetrate international markets. This year, along with Norway, it began with numerous European nations, including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.

In addition to these, the UK, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg will be added in 2023

Along with the start of customer deliveries, the automaker recently opened its first battery swap facility in Sweden.

  • NIO plans to offer its next-generation models to the US market

NIO plans to offer its next-generation models to the US market

NIO CEO reportedly announced plans to penetrate the United States with its next-gen models, as per China’s media outlet LatePost.

    US expansion plan

On November 15, CEO William Li revealed the strategy in an address to the company to commemorate NIO’s eighth anniversary, as per CnEVPost.

In the speech, he referred to an interview in which a US automaker CEO claimed that NIO would be a strong rival and expressed concern for the issue of competition.

“We can’t let the people who are learning from us run faster than us,” Li said.

CEO Li did not specify the US automaker he was talking about, but it seems to be Ford.

“We know our competition is NIO and Tesla, and we have to beat them, not match them,” Ford CEO Jim Farley stated during the Wolfe Research conference’s webcast in late February.

For reference, the Chinese electric vehicle maker offers six models in its homeland. Three of its models are based on NT 1.0 platform: the ES8, ES6, and EC6. On the other hand, the other three are NT 2.0 platform-based: ES7, ET7, and ET5.

    US policy complications

CEO Li revealed that NIO aims to enter the US market by the end of 2025 in an interview with German media platform Heise Autos the previous month. However, current US regulation is making things difficult.

He further claimed that the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act made it harder for international automakers to manufacture and penetrate that market.

“We will therefore monitor developments closely,” Li said.

NIO plans to construct a new US factory

NIO was reportedly hiring for employment related to vehicle manufacturing in the US as of late May. It signified the automaker’s intention to build innovative facilities in the nation.

However, NIO responded that it had no information that could be disclosed about the US plant construction.

NIO does not stop there. CEO Li also stated at the NIO Day 2021 event that the automaker plans to provide services to clients in over 25 nations and territories worldwide by the year 2025.

  • Deutsche Bank: Sales are hampered by NIO operational issues, but the “worse may finally be over“

Deutsche Bank: Sales are hampered by NIO operational issues, but the worse may finally be over

NIO failed to deliver a record-breaking number of vehicles in October due to operational difficulties. However, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu’s team suggests that the Chinese automaker’s delivery difficulties may have finally improved, according to CnEVPost.

Yu’s team stated in a research note:

“NIO continues to frustrate us/investors with another round of operational issues (silicon carbide supply, EDS assembly) which are holding back volume in 4Q but we are optimistic that the worse may finally be over, further supported by the government’s gradual pivot away from COVID zero.”

    Projected deliveries in December

Yu’s team claimed that the Chinese automaker might have to deliver about 20,000 vehicles to demonstrate that operation is truly improving.

In December, the team anticipates NIO to deliver 19,500 units. It includes 8,000 ET5 vehicles, boosting the Q4 total to around 43,000 units.

Product super cycle pushes into 2023

NIO is set to introduce five new models in the first six months of 2023. Apart from these, eight models will be available in June. One of these vehicles is reported to go up against the Tesla Model Y. As for the pricing, it is expected to cost around RMB 330,000 to 340,000.

It is also worth noting that six NIO models are now available in China. The NT 1.0 platform supports three models: ES8, ES6, and EC6. Meanwhile, the ES7, ET7, and ET5 are built on the NT 2.0 platform.

However, the three models based on the NT 1.0 platform, and the two additional models, will be updated by NIO in the first half of 2023, according to the team.

“With competition intensifying, we are encouraged by NIO’s aggressive product refresh cadence,” the team wrote.

The team increased their prediction for NIO deliveries in 2023 by 10,000 to 270,000 units in light of the new model’s faster cadence.

How does the lithium carbonate price affect gross margin?

NIO’s gross margin will be impacted by two percentage points for every RMB100,000 increase in the price of lithium carbonate.

Nonetheless, Li stated at the time that NIO anticipates the price of lithium carbonate to drop back to RMB 300,000 to 400,000 per ton the following year. For reference, lithium carbonate presently costs over RMB 600,000 per ton.

Yu’s team’s assessment predicts that the first half of 2023 will see significant pressure on gross margins.

However, according to NIO, the brand is about to recover in Q4 2023 and generate profit in 2024. The team stated:

“We generally think targets are achievable assuming raw materials can normalize somewhat.”

  • NIO nearly tripled its EV sales in October 2022

NIO nearly tripled its EV sales in October 2022

NIO saw a sales growth of 174% YoY, with a total of 10,059 electric vehicle deliveries in October, as per InsideEVs.

    China as NIO’s major market

In retrospect, only 3,667 NIO EVs were sold in October 2021 as a result of the JAC-NIO Advanced Manufacturing Center in Hefei being retooled. Notably, it was the sole NIO factory at the time. Thus, this significant growth rate is brought on by a relatively low base.

Meanwhile, the 10,000+ sales represent a consistent performance in comparison to the preceding months. However, it must be noted that this figure is a little less than in September and August sales.

It is hardly surprising that China accounts for most of NIO’s sales, as it is the automaker’s homeland. The Chinese automaker sold 2,928 sedans and 5,979 crossover/SUVs last month (up 60% YoY).

    COVID-19 affects NIO’s operations

Considering that China is once more adversely affected by COVID-19, it would be hard to predict how NIO would perform in the following months. In fact, the company had to shut down its factories due to new regulations.

“The vehicle production and delivery were constrained by operation challenges in our plants as well as supply chain volatilities due to the COVID-19 situations in certain regions in China,” NIO stated on November 1.

On November 2, Reuters verified that the company had paused manufacturing:

“The news that production at Nio’s factories has been temporarily suspended is true and this will have an impact on production and delivery schedules.”

    https://twitter.com/StckPro/status/1587120578762268674

To put it simply, limitations become a momentary full stop. It is indeed hard to predict how long manufacturing could need to restart.

Sales figures, as per the report:

    • Crossover/SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES7, ES8): 5,979 (up 60% year-over-year)

    including 1,895 ES7

    • Sedans (ET5, ET7): 4,080 (new)

    including 3,050 ET7 and 1,020 ET5

    • Total: 10,059 (up 174% year-over-year)

NIO car sales – October 2022

NIO has sold more than 92,000 electric vehicles worldwide this year to date:

    • Crossover/SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES7, ES8) YTD: 72,753 (up 3.8% year-over-year)
    • Sedans (ET5, ET7) YTD: 19,740 (new)
    • Total YTD: 92,493 (up 32% year-over-year)

NIO delivered 259,563 electric vehicles overall, with over 113,000 of those sales occurring in the previous 12 months. It is also worth noting that its 200,000th vehicle was built on April 26.

    NIO’s models

NIO’s six electric vehicle models are the EC6ES6ES7ES8ET5, and ET7. The ET5 is made at NeoPark (NIO’s second plant). Meanwhile, the other five models are manufactured at the JAC-NIO Advanced Manufacturing Center in Hefei.

The first-generation platform is utilized by the EC6, ES6, and ES8. On the other hand, the NT 2.0 platform is used by ES7, ET5, and ET7.

Considering that China is the primary market of NIO, the resurgence of COVID-19 is terrible news for the automaker. Hopefully, it will not affect NIO’s current growth rate and European expansion plans.

  • NIO has announced its European launch plans

NIO has announced its European launch plans

The Chinese multinational automaker known for its battery-swapping technology has reportedly announced its European launch plans ahead of the expected UK arrival in 2023. According to AM OnlineNIO revealed its planned products and services for the European market, including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden, at its European launch event in Berlin.

    https://twitter.com/Prof_JamesCook/status/1577595924968345600

NIO’s European offering will also include a vehicle subscription service. With this, customers would be offered periods ranging from one to sixty months.

CEO William Li, NIO founder, chairman, and CEO, stated, “Serving users in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden is an important step in realizing NIO’s 2025 plan and offering our unique user experience in more countries around the world.”

“Our compelling products, game-changing charging and battery swapping services, alongside truly innovative and flexible subscription models, will change the landscape of EVs. Our commitment to the region marks the start of NIO’s next chapter in our global development.”

In hindsight, news regarding NIO’s ambitions to create a European manufacturing facility in Hungary to boost its European expansion goals has previously surfaced.

Notably, NIO has already entered Norway and Sweden. However, the OEM has indicated that the brand will come to the UK in 2023, where it has engaged former Volvo Car UK commercial director Matt Galvin.

Co-founder Lihong Qin stated, “There is a very deep connection between NIO and the UK because we had our first strategic and product workshops open in London in 2015.

“We opened our London office on the first day we launched and run our Advanced performance team in Oxford. I want to be in the UK as soon as possible but because of the right-hand steering it has taken us longer.

“Under our current plan we expect to enter the UK market by the end of next year.”

In fact, Geely already has a substantial presence in the European automotive industry with its brands Lotus Cars, the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), and Polestar. It also recently purchased a share in Aston Martin.

Meanwhile, MG Motor UK is the country’s fastest-growing brand. Furthermore, the long-awaited entrance of BYD is also predicted.

Going back, NIO currently has five models on the market, with four more on the way. The EP9 hypercar, the ES8 seven-seater SUV, the ES6 five-seater SUV, the EC6 coupe SUV, the ET7 saloon, and the ET5 small saloon have all already been released.
