German legacy automaker Volkswagen successfully beat industry leader Tesla in its home market from January to July of this year, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority’s (KBA) latest data.
In this period, VW’s electric vehicle sales also surpassed luxury brand trio, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.
VW vs. Tesla
Volkswagen’s German EV sales reached 41,475 units in the first seven months of the year. This remarkable result is attributable to the production ramp-up of its new offerings ID. Buzz passenger van and ID. Buzz Cargo commercial van.
Volkswagen’s impressive advancement is largely driven by its newly launched ID. Buzz. As per the data, the electric van’s sales hit 2,815 units from January to July.
Additionally, it accounted for nearly 7% of the automaker’s German EV sales in that period. Meanwhile, the famous models VW ID.4 and ID.5 contributed most of the total sales at 22,405 units.
The smaller VW ID.3 electric hatchback sold 13,647 units. The VW e-up followed it with its sales of 2,943 units.
Meanwhile, American EV giant Tesla recorded 40,289 unit sales in the same period. The 1,186 unit difference indicates the intensified competition between the two major players in the EV industry.
The world’s top-selling vehicle Tesla Model Y accounted for nearly 75% or 29,829 units of the company’s German EV sales. The Model 3 followed it with sales of 9,045 units.
Their siblings, Model S and X, delivered a weak performance in this period, with sales of only 855 and 494, correspondingly.
The data also indicated that VW and Tesla’s sales are twofold higher than the third placer Mercedes-Benz’s record of 20,613 unit sales. Mercedes’ top-selling EV was the EQA, with sales of 7,813 units.
Audi took the fourth spot with sales of 16,786 EVs. BMW completed the top five with 16,786 unit sales.

Despite the progressive EV adoption in Germany, traditional vehicles still beat it by a significant margin. The data revealed that the country’s total EV sales reached 268,926. However, it remains behind internal combustion engine-powered cars, with sales of 1.64 million units from January to July.
That said, the German EV industry must intensify its efforts to promote the shift and encourage more people to consider owning EVs.
