One of Tesla’s upcoming software updates could give the sound systems in its current and new vehicles an upgrade.
According to BGR, Tesla’s been working with major record labels for months to bring Dolby Atmos to its cars. Once the software update is laid out, more than 1 million Tesla cars currently on the road will back Dolby Atmos, which includes all newly manufactured vehicles.
Dolby Atmos is a surround sound format from Dolby that utilizes height channels to interpret sounds as 3D objects. Dolby Atmos premiered in Los Angeles in 2012 and has made its way into thousands of cars and home and movie theaters.
Automakers bringing Dolby Atmos to its vehicles
Notably, Lucid Motors was the first automaker to bring Dolby Atmos sound to its Lucid Air sedan in early 2021. In addition, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo revealed that they’d be bringing Dolby Atmos to more cars this fall.
Mercedes-Benz is putting Atmos to its Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, EQS, EQS SUV, EQE, and EQE SUV. Meanwhile, Volvo’s EX90 SUV will add Dolby Atmos.
Soon, Tesla should be on this list as well.
Apple Music integration on Tesla models
In related news, Apple Music integration seems to be also in the pipeline for Tesla vehicles. Earlier this week, a Twitter user spotted the app on a Tesla Model S in the Petersen Automotive Museum exhibit in LA.
It is also possible Apple Music and Apple’s Spatial Audio technology will support Dolby Atmos. However, this was not specifically confirmed by a source.
Furthermore, Apple Music integration is probably coming to Tesla vehicles in the holiday update before the end of 2022. However, it is unclear if Dolby Atmos support will be ready at the same time. We will probably find out when the update rolls out this late November or next month.
