Tesla will soon launch a tech package that can convert the all-electric pickup Cybertruck into a boat. The announcement came from Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk himself, saying that the automaker will offer a “mod package” for the Cybertruck.
Elon Musk’s plan announcement
Prominent comedian Jay Leno recently released a YouTube video content for his Jay Leno’s Garage web series, in which Tesla’s Vehicle Engineering VP Lars Moravy and Tesla Head of Design Franz von Holzhausen participated.
VP Moravy told Leno that the Cybertruck “almost floats” and gave a funny idea for owners to include an outboard motor plugged into the outlet to transform the pickup into a boat.
“The vehicle almost floats; and if you’re creative you could figure out how to put an outboard motor plugged in to your outlet there turn it on from your screen and go boating.”

Tesla investor and content creator @SawyerrMerritt shared the video excerpt in X, to which the Tesla Chief responded:
“We are going to offer a mod package that enables Cybertruck to traverse at least 100m of water as a boat.
Mostly just need to upgrade cabin door seals.”

Musk’s plans to make the Cybertruck water-friendly
Electrek reported Tesla Chief Elon Musk’s remarks last year that the Cybertruck would be “waterproof enough” to become a boat and cross even rivers:
CEO Musk further indicated his ambitious plans to have the Cybertruck cross the water from SpaceX’s Starbase and South Padre Island in Texas. For reference, the distance between these two locations is approximately 360 meters (1,100 feet).
Tesla’s move to offer a “Wade Mode” to the Cybertruck’s Off-Road Mode to pressure the battery pack to seal it is apparently part of the company’s plans to achieve the said plans.
Tesla fans’ response
According to Design Boom, CEO Musk’s mod package announcement did not surprise Tesla fans, considering his previous hints about the Cybertruck’s amphibious features since 2020.
CEO Musk even responded with a 3D artist’s render that turned the Cybertruck into a boat.
“I think we could make that work.”

All that said, the recent announcement caused significant excitement among Tesla and Cybertruck fans. Some even created new Cybertruck-boat hybrid renders and AI-generated images to depict the EV’s capability to navigate through waters.
Unfortunately, CEO Musk did not reveal more details about the mod package nor the timeline for its launch. It would undoubtedly be a huge hit when it hits the market, considering the level of excitement among enthusiasts today.
