Tesla’s first Supercharger with Magic Dock has begun testing in the United States, allowing non-Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) to recharge their batteries.
It’s been a while since Elon Musk’s company began introducing its Supercharger network to non-Tesla EV owners in Europe. And it has started doing so in North America this time.
Tesla begins testing in the US
Tesla’s first Magic Dock Supercharger has begun testing in the United States.
According to a recent Electrek report, the all-electric car manufacturer has started equipping Magic Docks to one of its Superchargers in the United States.
According to the online news outlet, when the Supercharging network in Europe opened its doors to non-Tesla users, the Musk-owned EV maker said it would do the same in North America by the end of 2022.
However, as we acknowledged the new year, the Supercharger network in the United States still needed to offer to charge services to other car owners.
According to Electrek, opening Tesla’s charging network to other electric car brands in North America is more difficult than in Europe.
Musk placed the Magic Dock in the Supercharger station
In Europe, Musk’s EV maker already has a CCS connector that works with other car brands.
On the other hand, the US-based Superchargers use Tesla’s proprietary connector, restricting other EV owners from topping off their batteries. The giant automaker must switch to a new connector or adapter to open its doors to everyone else.
But now, Tesla has begun testing a method to open up its Supercharger network to most of North America’s EV owners.
The EV manufacturer began its project by placing a “Magic Dock” in one of its US Supercharger stations.
With that, a Reddit user noticed a Rivian R1T electric pickup truck charging at the first Tesla Supercharger station loaded with the “Magic Dock.”
How Does Tesla’s Magic Dock Work?
According to Auto Revolution, Tesla has discovered a way for other EV owners to charge their all-electric vehicles in its Supercharger network across North America.
And the solution is the “Magic Dock,” primarily a double latch adapter with a CCS connection.
Non-Tesla EV owners might connect to the Magic Dock’s CCS connector by unlocking it with the Tesla app. This should convert the Tesla Supercharger connector into a CCS adapter.
