Tesla has introduced its recent innovation in charging technology, the Tesla J1772 Wall Connector, for $550. It is a home charging station compatible with Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles.
However, the company’s website states that Tesla owners need an SAE J1772 plug to charge their vehicles.
Tesla is known to employ its own connector for cars made for the North American market, compared to all other electric car manufacturers. This system makes the company’s charging network and products exclusively compatible with its own electric vehicles.
According to Teslarati, Tesla introduced the J1772 Wall Connector ahead of plans to allow all EVs in the US to use its Supercharging network.
“Tesla is expanding production capacity of power electronics components that convert alternating current to direct current, charging cabinets, posts, and cables. Later this year, Tesla will begin production of new Supercharger equipment that will enable non-Tesla EV drivers in North America to use Tesla Superchargers,” the Biden-Harris Administration said.
According to Electrek, the standard embraced by the rest of the sector is CCS/J1772. However, Tesla’s connector has been commended for being more user-friendly and effective.
In retrospect, there was an attempt to make Tesla’s connector the new standard earlier this year. Remarkably, Tesla has been striving to have its own charging network and products available to non-Tesla EVs.
The report also indicated that the automaker plans to install CCS connectors to Supercharger stations in North America as it did in Europe.
Additionally, Tesla reportedly debuted a new model of its home charging station, the Wall Connector, last year, but it was not on sale for long. However, the fact that it used a J1772 connector implies that the charger was designed for non-Tesla EV customers.

This initiative, which aims to make charging networks more accessible for everyone, is a significant move to further increase the penetration of electric vehicles not just in the US but also worldwide. Drivers would be more encouraged to switch to electric vehicles if adequate charging infrastructure and solutions were available.
