Electric vehicle giant Tesla proudly announced that its customer fleet has officially driven more than 1 billion miles ((1.6 billion kilometers) using its Full Self-Driving (FSD) in April 2024, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to achieve full autonomy.
FSD’s 1-billion-mile milestone
Tesla shared the FSD 1-billion-mile milestone on its official Tesla AI account on X. The Musk-led company attached a graph of the total miles the FSD testers have driven over the past few years.
As you can observe in the graph, Tesla recorded a huge increase in the cumulative FSD miles in the past few months. Given the recent launch of major software updates like the FSD v12, it is no longer surprising.
It is also worth noting that the surge in FSD miles driven occurred after Tesla launched a complimentary one-month trial of FSD 12.3.3 for all owners with the recent 2024.3.10 software update.
As expected, the social media-active Chief Executive shared his delight about the major FSD milestone on X.
“Congrats Tesla AI team!”

Competition
The Tesla FSD’s more than 1 billion-mile milestone is definitely remarkable, considering the current number of miles driven by other autonomous driving leaders in the market.
For instance, Waymo disclosed last December that its self-driving cars drove more than 7 million miles in rider-only trips. Meanwhile, Cruise shared that its autonomous driving fleet crossed 3 million driverless miles last July.
As of now, GM’s Cruise remains under pressure from the major accident it got involved in last October. As a result, it dismissed nine “key leaders” and laid off a quarter of its workforce. It also lost its testing permit in the United States.
Waymo and Cruise’s records demonstrate the significant lead of the FSD suite when it comes to cumulative miles driven.
FSD progress
Tesla Chief Elon Musk recently confirmed plans to unveil the highly awaited Robotaxi on August 8, 2024.
Its FSD 12.3.3 has also received positive feedback from testers, including successful drives without interventions. Some testers even report that the FSD 12.3.3 managed to pass construction zones and navigate through roadways made from just cones.
Tesla also replaced the “Beta” moniker from the FSD with “Supervised.” CEO Elon Musk recently instructed delivery centers to offer a test drive with the FSD activated as part of the delivery process. In addition, it offered a free one-month trial for eligible models. These efforts will substantially boost the FSD’s cumulative miles in the coming months.
