American electric automaker Rivian announced Tuesday plans to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) and utilize the massive Tesla Supercharging network.
Tesla officially welcomed Rivian to its growing NACS family by reposting its Twitter announcement.
Notably, Rivian’s move comes after its American rivals Ford and GM recently climbed aboard the NACS train.
Agreement
As per the agreement signed by Tesla and Rivian, the latter will have access to the Musk-led company’s Supercharging network as early as spring 2024. In essence, Rivian R1T and R1S owners can charge their electric vehicles in any Tesla Supercharger via an adapter.
In addition, Rivian will standardly equip its next-gen R1 vehicles and planned R2 platform with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge ports by 2025, eliminating the need for an adapter.
Rivian’s plan is very similar to Ford and GM’s announcement, which also aims to officially incorporate their EVs with NACS ports by 2025.
“It’s great to see the industry coming together to adopt the North American Charging Standard. By doing so, we’re collectively ensuring all EV drivers have access to easy to use, reliable charging hardware. We look forward to welcoming Rivian owners to thousands of our Superchargers across North America.”
Rebecca Tinucci, Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure at Tesla
Rivian highlighted that the transportation sector accounts for more than a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. In response, the automaker is promoting electrification away from polluting gas-powered vehicles.
Rivian believes that these kinds of partnerships can boost EV uptake as it addresses the technology’s major impediment: charging infrastructures.
“We’re excited to work with Tesla and to see collaborations like this help advance the world toward carbon neutrality. The adoption of the North American Charging Standard will enable our existing and future customers to leverage Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network while we continue to build out our Rivian Adventure Network. We look forward to continuing to find new ways to accelerate EV adoption.”

It is unsurprising that many automakers are eyeing Tesla Superchargers as it offers more direct current fast-charging plugs than any other rival networks in the US. Moreover, they are strategically erected in prime locations throughout freeway travel corridors.
Tesla shares surged 5.3% on Tuesday and grew approximately 40% since Ford’s announcement of adopting the NACS on May 25.
