Tesla Giga Shanghai reportedly contributed to over 50% of the Musk-led automaker’s global sales in 2022, InsideEVs reports citing CPCA’s data.
CPCA’s latest data revealed that Tesla’s Chinese gigafactory produced 710,865 electric vehicles last year. For reference, Tesla’s global sales in 2022 reached 1,313,851.
As per the calculation, 54.4% of Tesla’s 2022 sales are attributed to Giga Shanghai.
Giga Shanghai
It is well known that Giga Shanghai has been Tesla’s trump card since it began production in late 2019. It was formerly led by Tom Zhu, which was recently promoted to supervise the US operations.
The Chinese gigafactory has 2,000 employees for the production of high-quality Tesla Model 3 and Model Y units. In fact, Tesla customers frequently compare them to Fremont-made cars.
Notably, 2022 was volatile and full of unexpected events, such as line improvements, production halts, lockdowns, etc. Nonetheless, Tesla saw a YoY growth of 29% in terms of overall sales per Teslarati.
Where could Tesla’s upcoming factory be located?
It is also worth noting that the American EV giant is planning to launch another gigafactory which may be in Canada. The Canadian minister of industry and innovation had previously acknowledged discussions with Tesla regarding a new facility last September.
Interestingly, EV enthusiasts raised the possibility of a Montreal Gigafactory when Tesla also posted a job listing for a high-volume recruiter in the Quebec region.
Tesla’s success in the automotive industry is extremely astounding, despite its difficulties in 2022. Interestingly, Tesla’s 1,313,851 global sales marked its first year with a million units sold. It ended its most prosperous quarter in company history.
