Hertz, one of the world’s largest auto rental companies, announced on Tuesday that it intends to purchase up to 175,000 electric vehicles from General Motors over the next five years, according to Electrek.
The first Chevy Bolt EV and EUV deliveries are anticipated to start in the first quarter of 2023. By 2027, Hertz will be able to lease a wide range of vehicles, including compact cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and luxury automobiles, owing to GM’s upcoming electric vehicle portfolio.
Furthermore, Hertz will get access to GM’s new commercial EV division, BrightDrop’s Zevo 600 van.
Hertz and GM declared that over the next five years, the latter would supply up to 175,000 electric vehicles under a variety of brand names.
“Hertz (NASDAQ: HTZ) and General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today announced an agreement in which Hertz plans to order up to 175,000 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and BrightDrop EVs over the next five years. Hertz and GM believe this plan is the largest expansion of EVs among fleet customers and the broadest because it spans a wide range of vehicle categories and price points — from compact and midsize SUVs to pickups, luxury vehicles and more.” |
Hertz aims to purchase EVs from all of GM’s brands, including electric vans from BrightDrop, after the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV deliveries in the first quarter of 2023. However, a sizable portion of the order is anticipated to be accounted for by the new Equinox EV and Blazer EV.
Hertz’s CEO Stephen Scherr made the following remarks in response to the announcement that was released today:
It’s exciting that two iconic American companies that have shaped the evolution of transportation for more than a century are coming together to redefine the future of mobility in the 21st century. We are thrilled to partner with GM on this initiative, which will dramatically expand our EV offering to Hertz customers, including leisure and business travelers, rideshare drivers and corporates.
Hertz’s CEO Stephen Scherr
Our work with Hertz is a huge step forward for emissions reduction and EV adoption that will help create thousands of new EV customers for GM. With the vehicle choice, technology and driving range we’re delivering, I’m confident that each rental experience will further increase purchase consideration for our products and drive growth for our company.

With tens of thousands of Tesla vehicles spread over 500 locations, Hertz is about to establish the largest electric vehicle fleet in North America. Furthermore, it is leasing a few further tens of thousands of Tesla cars to Uber drivers.
Hertz bought 100,000 Tesla Model 3 just last year, while the Model Y was most recently added to the order. Remarkably, the rental car firm anticipates having all 100,000 Tesla vehicles by the end of 2022. In April, Hertz declared that over the next five years, its fleet would also get up to 65,000 electric vehicles from Polestar.
