Germany reported a 37% year-on-year growth in passenger car registrations to 273,417 units in August, InsideEVs reports, citing KBA’s data. As for the overall new vehicle registrations, it enjoyed a 16.5% YoY increase to 1,913,564 units.
Likewise, the country’s plug-in electric vehicle registrations recorded their highest growth level so far in 2023 in the eighth month of the year.
Plug-in EV registrations in August 2023
Germany enjoyed a 78% YoY increase in plug-in electric car registrations to 101,201 units in August. It accounted for 37% of the country’s overall vehicle volume during that period (up from just 28.5 in 2022).
Of that total, battery electric vehicles contributed 86,649 units, up 171% YoY. It represents 31.7% of the overall automotive market, an almost twofold growth from just 16.1% in 2022.
Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid car (PHEV) registrations dropped 41% YoY to 14,552. It indicates the vehicles’ eighth straight month of decline, according to the report.
This year to date, German plug-in EV registrations have already achieved 463,537 units (up 12% YoY).

Top brands
Volkswagen was the best-selling automotive brand in Germany in August 2023, with 11,683 plug-in vehicle registrations. Mercedes-Benz followed with 8,034 unit registrations.
BMW ranked third with plug-in vehicle registrations of 7,183 units. The top five were completed by Opel (6,999) and Tesla (6,903).

Tesla’s popular Model Y claimed the top spot in the top-selling BEV model rankings from January to August, with registrations of 34,687 units.
Germany’s Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5 followed with 28,088 units and Volkswagen ID.3 with 17,283 units.
The top five were completed by Fiat 500 Electric (14,352) and Skoda Enyaq iV (13,009).
