Domino’s Pizza now has the biggest electric delivery fleet in the US after announcing plans to add over 800 2023 Chevy Bolt EVs to its operation, according to Teslarati.
According to CEO Russel Weiner, Domino’s aims to “lead the charge in the future of pizza delivery,” after testing automated vehicles for deliveries in 2015.
“Domino’s has always been on the cutting edge of pizza delivery and electric delivery cars make sense as vehicle technology continues to evolve,” he added. “We’ve made a commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and this is one way we can begin reducing our environmental impact, one delivery at a time.”
Domino’s Pizza leads the pizza delivery future
This month, pizza delivery services across the country will start using more than 100 specially branded Chevy Bolt EVs from Domino’s Pizza. The fleet will increase by 700 more units in the ensuing months.
It is worth noting that the American pizza restaurant chain has already made and delivered pizzas for 62 years. In retrospect, a Volkswagen Beetle was the company’s very first delivery vehicle.
“Domino’s launched pizza delivery in 1960 with a Volkswagen Beetle, rolled out the DXP – a custom-built pizza delivery vehicle – in 2015, tested autonomous pizza delivery with cars and robots, and is now leading the charge in the future of pizza delivery,” said Domino’s chief executive officer, Russell Weiner.
On the other hand, maintenance and gasoline expenses are Domino’s primary drivers for transitioning to a partial EV fleet. The company’s statement precisely mentions minimizing maintenance expenses and sustaining deliveries “without the financial impact of high gas prices.”
Ed Peper, Vice President of GM Fleet at General Motors, provided a statement regarding the partnership:
“We’re excited that Domino’s has chosen the Chevrolet Bolt EV to build their electric pizza delivery fleet in the U.S. Both companies are committed to bettering our environment. GM plans to eliminate tailpipe emissions from new US light-duty vehicles by 2035. With an affordable price, fun driving characteristics, and a 259-mile range, the Chevy Bolt EV is the future of Domino’s electrified deliveries.”
