China‘s passenger car market recorded another solid month, with sales up 10% YoY in September. Meanwhile, the plug-in electric vehicles market share increased to over a third of the overall market, according to InsideEVs.
It is worth noting that over 50% of all plug-in electric vehicle sales worldwide are attributed to China. EV Volumes’ data via Jose Pontes reveals that around 636,000 new passenger plug-in electric cars were registered in China in September, up 78% from a year earlier. It accounted for about 35% of the total volume.
Remarkably, all-electric car sales (475,00) and plug-in electric car sales (161,000) set this excellent record. In fact, PHEV sales have increased 148% YoY in the past month, outpacing all other types of vehicles.
Results for the month:
· BEVs: about 475,000 (up 62%) and 26% share
· PHEVs: about 161,000 (up 148%) and 9% share
· Total: 636,223 (up 78%) and 35% share
Interestingly, more than 4 million new plug-in electric passenger cars have been registered in China this year to date. It exceeds the amount for the entire year 2021.
However, it is also worth noting that approximately 3.2 million plug-in electric vehicle registrations totaled about 153% more than the previous year in 2021. (from 1.27 million in 2020).

China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) estimates that around 6 million passenger plug-in electric cars might be sold in China in 2022.

As evident from the data provided, seven of China’s top ten best-selling models were rechargeable. It is also remarkable that the Tesla Model Y once again led the market during a month with a high number of deliveries (46,694).
Trailing behind Tesla Model Y is the BYD Song, with 45,934 deliveries for all its versions. Third place went to the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV (37,416). Nissan Sylphy, the top ICE model, came in fourth, followed closely by BYD Qin (36,058).
Despite being second, six of the best plug-in models in China came from BYD.

The Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV continues to dominate the market in terms of volume year to date. However, its lead against the BYD Song (BEV + PHEV) has shrunk again.
Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y drew closer to the BYD Qin family. Six BYD models got in on the top 10 rankings for the year-to-date. Far behind is the AC Aion with 81, 201 units.
